If America is such a bad place, why is it that so many people from around the world want to come here?
-
I have been blessed enough to have had a good education and good jobs that have allowed me to travel. In my travels one thing never changes, everyone hates America. They constantly say we are evil and we are the cause of their problems. I mean every problem they have we caused it, but at the same time if they are given the chance to go to America they would run to America if they could. Why is it that so many talk trash about the U.S. but also want to be here? Even immigrants (mostly illegal) will say our country is the worst country in the world and we are an evil empire. As I said, I have been to 26 countries spanning from Canada, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, The UK, S. Korea, Thailand, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, Japan, Pakistan, Greece, Egypt, etc. For example after the 2005 Kashmir earthquake the US Military was the first on scene and was the nation that provided Pakistan with the quickest and largest monetary, medical and labored help for the Earthquake Relief, but 5 years later most Pakistanis have a lapse of amentia and again hate America. Comments please.

I think this may mostly come down to personal perception. I've lived in four countries and travelled to over 40, and yet I don't remember feeling an overwhelming sense of anti-Americanism in any of them. Unfortunately, as an American you become the target for anyone smart enough to form an opinion and yet stupid enough to forget to make sure it's intelligent. Your American accent acts as an idiot magnet, drawing towards you every fool carrying a Texas-sized chip on his shoulder. In many cases this sort of behaviour will put you on the defensive, forced to engage in a debate with someone who has no idea what he's talking about. I've seen plenty of pleasant, mild-mannered Americans become flag waving, Uncle Sam underpants wearing patriots simply because some rude, drunk, tactless mook has decided it's fun to take a pop at a Yank. Outside of these unpleasant situations, though, I've found the majority of people I've met from every country to be quite well disposed to America. We like your movies, your TV shows and all the weird and wonderful stuff your nation produces. Personally, I'm a big fan. Don;t worry too much about the vocal, idiotic minority :)

I also have been blessed enough to travel extensively. I have lived in a few different countries as well. I can honestly say my experience is vastly different from yours. I have had a handful of people through the years make positive comments about the US and wanting to live there. Yet the vast majority had negative things to say, even going so far as to ask how I felt now that I managed to escape the US. Some people are neutral to the US, saying they wouldn't mind visiting, yet would never like to live there. Cultures are all different. The US still holds to beliefs and practices many countries deem barbaric. The way the US behaves internationally as well does not help. Yes they do some good, but that good is heavily overshadowed by all the damage they do. Not everyone wants to run off to the US. Most people are happy with where they live. It is usually those from 3rd world countries, and developing countries that dream of a life in the US. However all too often people take that leap and move to the US...only to be dramatically disappointed. The US paints and spreads one image of itself globally, yet reality is vastly different.

Most people don't think that America is a bad place, Most will say that the US is a great country! What people complain about is the US foreign policy which they find invasive. During the past century the US has occupied many countries and intervened in many foreign situations. This has raised a lot of animosity towards it. There are many other nations that are also powerful that provide help to others during earthquakes and disaster situations and contribute to education as well, but these countries do not intervene politically in the same way the the US does. And also, sometimes when Americans travel to other nations, they are not very respectful of the culture or customs. This creates animosity too because people tend to generalize and think that everyone is like that. A lot of people, not everyone, want to live in the United States and think it's a great place because there is religious and sexual freedom, as well as freedom of speech, laws are enforced, education is better and there are many more job and career opportunities than in their own countries. The US was founded by immigrants who were running away from oppression in their countries and many immigrants look up to that. A wrong idea is that these people are jealous of the US and its freedoms, they are not jealous! they They just see the US interventions as an intrusion. They don't understand it. So to sum it up the problem is not about the country itself and how it treates its citizens, it's the idea of what the country does to other countries or tries to enforce abroad. I'm not saying they are right or wrong, but just how it's seen!

Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security. we keep the poor from being a travesty and republicans seem to not like the burden. Would your God bless or damn our nation because it gives money to the poor?
