How can I change my first name, given in passport?

Name change after marriage? I Need to add his surname to my name.?

  • Hi, I have only one name ( no surname, no initials to expand). So, in my passport my name comes in the 'Given Name' field and 'Surname' field is left blank. In my US visa the given name became my last name and for first name, they put FNU (First Name Unknown). As it is very annoying, I have decided to add my husband's surname as my surname. I know that I have to give an affidavit in the court and advertise the change in news paper. My doubts are 1. How to get the change in my passport? 2. Will my education certificates be still valid? 3. How easy/difficult is it to have the changes on the passport? Please help. Thank you.

  • Answer:

For your passport you'll need to stop by your local embassy or consulate and give them a copy of your marriage certificate. Your education will still be valid. Your old name will now be known as an alias. It's an extremely easy process.
