Can I get a job at the Chinese Embassy or Consulate?

Is it hard to get a job as a translator or interpreter at an embassy/consulate?

  • Answer:

Pretty difficult. The State Department pays extra to employees who speak a foreign language. For technical stuff, like reading birth certificates, the embassy generally hires a local person. And they have local staff whose skills include English, so the officers don't *have* to be bilingual. Better to think about becoming a foreign service officer or staff. Too many variables here, but if you look at the Department of State jobs page, you can begin there. Check both sites below. Take care!
