What should my college major be?

If Somebody wanted to work In a U.S. Embassy Overseas Then what major would they need to Pick in College?

  • Can somebody please give me some information about this. I have a friend who wants to work in a U.S. Embassy Overseas and the Countries that she said that she would like to work in are either England, Ireland or Scotland and Probably Italy or maybe even in Japan. But she does not know where to start . 1.) Does Anyone know what Major She Would Have To Go After ? 2.) How Long Does it usually take to achieve a major like this ? 3.) Which Major is better Criminal Investigation or Working in A U.S. Embassy Overseas? 4.) If she does Major in this then, does that mean that while working in one of these embassy's then would she be able to earn a citizenship in one of these Countries ? 5.) Would you say that a major like this is dangerous - Since My Friend will be away from her country (America) If she does major in this ? 6.) Which one would you say is best - Either working as a "Forensics's Investigator" or working in an "American Embassy" overseas ? 7.) Which one Pays Best ? 8.) Another thing she would like to know is "What are the kinds of benefits that these 2 Majors Have to offer ? As Crazy as some of these questions may sound to some of you who read this - Can you please give me some honest and helpful information So that I can give to my Friend . I would greatly Appreciate it ! Thanks Everyone ! :)

  • Answer:

there are various types of jobs at a US embassy. what she should major in would depend on what she really wants to do. for example, if she wants to be an economics officer, majoring in economics would be a good idea. languages are always very helpful. however, if she wants to be in investigation and security work, she could apply for a Diplomatic Security position which would allow her to concentrate in that field but still work at embassies overseas.

Embassy overseas pays more. But you have to be overseas almost all the time which can be hard on your family. Forensics investigator can be local.

George has already answered some of your questions; I'll try to clarify some things as well. First of all, England and Scotland are not states. They are both part of the United Kingdom, which is a state. 1. See George's reply. It basically depends on what she's interested in doing. 2. I assume you mean an undergraduate degree, which are typically 4 years in the US. 3. I'd be very surprised if there is such a major as "Working in a US embassy overseas". 4. No. Diplomats do not earn residency or citizenship rights in the countries they serve in. 5. Um... no. There are, in fact, many places in the world that, amazingly, are safe even though they're not in America. Some of them are even far safer. 6. Best for what? It depends on what your friend is interested in. 7. Hard to say - you'd need to do further research. Finally, it sounds like your friend hasn't really given this all that much serious thought, or put a lot of effort into the research. She's considering a field that is extremely competitive, where she will be up against people with impressive qualifications from impressive universities. If she's simply interested in living abroad there are easier ways to do it.
