How long does it take for American students to get an Australian student visa?

  • I am an American student and I was accepted to an Australian university to do a full bachelor degree course; the start date is Feb 28 2011 and I need to apply for and Australian visa. How long does it take to get it processed? apperantly I have to apply for an electrical one. For medical stuff I tested positive for TB here in the U.S. and had Xrays done and they came out negative. Also my doctor treated me with isoniazid and another medication that I can't remember the name of; he treated me with those to "bubble me in" is what he said so that in anycase I woudn't be contagious which is what american doctors trend even if Xrays come out negative. would it take way longer with the xrays? and do I have to pay extra for that? would my medical cover me?

  • Answer:

A Student visa for an American student usually takes only a couple of weeks. If you are required to have a medical, no existing results would be acceptable - you would need a new medical carried out by an authorised panel doctor and would of course have to pay for that. Whether the medical would hold up the visa process depends on how soon you could have it after being requested to do so and the results. You'll have plenty of time if you lodge your visa application within the next few weeks.
