I want to immigrate to Spain, how can I do it?
-
I'm Hispanic and sick of living in a country that is so anti-Hispanic. So I now want to move to Spain and start a new life there. I'm going this January as a tourist to check it out. I also have lots of Spanish friends that keep telling me that I would love it there. I do not plan to go to Spain and take the jobs from the locals. My plan is to go there and start my own bar/restaurant/club. The business will be aim at selling American,Mexican, and Salvadoran food. I also plan in to turning it in to a club on the weekends that plays American and Latin dance music. I have $80,000 save up. I know that I will have to start from scratch. I just need to know what type of visa I will need to move there and open this business? Would I still need a work visa? Will the Spanish embassy and Spanish people see me with good eyes if I'm creating a business that will provide jobs to the locals?

Answer:
Before you decide to move, settle, immigrate or basically call a new country home, you need to go and experience it for a length of time and make a well informed decision. Just because you say you are Hispanic, of Salvadorian heritage I assume, you will never be considered Spanish and the anti-Hispanic feelings you have here may be truly magnified in Spain as the only Central Americans I ever encountered in Spain were domestic helpers and other menial labor type jobs. They felt racism at every turn and the ability to find jobs in mainstream Spain was very difficult if not impossible. You have a good idea but you are assuming that there is a market for American / Mexican / Salvadorian food to the point that you are going to make a living. You won't be able to figure this out in your head or even on YA so you need to go and perform the due diligence. 80K is only about 60K Euros and agree with the previous poster, you are well underfunded and if you hope to find an investment partner than you better have all your ducks in a row and know you are going to make money. I'm sure Spain has a process for an investment visa but it will be much higher than 80K. Probably more in the neighborhood of 500K since even in Latin America the investment visas average around 250K. If you can't qualify for an investment visa then you need to look at other avenues. Work visas are only granted to those that have found employment with a local company and that company agrees to sponsor your visa to work for them. This is to insure you do not become a drain on state funds. The company is basically guaranteeing that they will cover any financial obligations you incur while in Spain. Now as you mentioned, getting a work visa for a job that can easily be covered by either a Spaniard or someone else legally allowed to work in the European Union will be very difficult unless you have a skill that is lacking - i.e. Doctor, International Lawyer, Teacher - etc... Good luck but you have a lot more research to do than what can be answered here on YA.
