The program running the exchange should help you with all the paper work, but you'll likely need to visit the Swiss Embassy (probably on 5th Avenue or other parts of the Upper East Side and Midtown East, where most of the NYC Embassies are). That's what my wife had to do to get her student visa for a 4 month stay in Sweden for a college study abroad program. Act fast, some countries take a while to issue a student visa. You'll need a passport as well, of course, and that can take a while if you don't already have one.

I know you can stay in Switzerland for 3 months with just a passport. I'm sure the program you're going with can inform you, or google the Swiss consulate or embassy.
