Should i change my name back before getting a passport?

Change name prior to getting british passport?

  • Hi im a vietnamese student living in the uk, ive been here for 3 years and now have british citizenship, i'm going to apply for a passport soon and im planning to change my name via a deed poll. My mum had recently done hers but she said something about the vietnamese embassy not agreeing with the name change. Could anyone help me please? Thanks muchly in advance

  • Answer:

I can only guess that this is because Vietnamese law doesn't allow a change of name. But the only effect that has is in any dealings with the Vietnamese Embassy - you'll just have to use your current name in any dealings with them and your new name the rest of the time, and recognise that you can't use it in Vietnam. The other point is that the Vietnamese government does not properly recognise dual nationality and does not recognise that you are a British citizen. I would guess this means you can only travel to Vietnam on a Vietnamese passport.
