  • Can I enter the usa with a temporary australian passport? plz help? Im an australian citizen in canada and my visa in canada is about to expire SO I MUST LEAVE THE COUNTRY BY DEC 2 BUT I just lost my australian passport..and i have already booked this whole trip to honolulu , vegas and l.a through to the united states then fly home to sydney. I have spoken to the australian consulate they can ONLY issue me a temporary passport without a microchip ( 3 page )I was told the usa doesnt accept passports with no microchip? but you might have a chance if you obtain a visa before you enter. IS THIS POSSIBLE TO ENTER THE USA & WHAT VISA DO I NEED! ? (there IS no possible way of changing my flight ) I have no money only a couple of hundred to spend in each place theres no way so its an absulute MUST I go through the Usa I cant seem to get a straight answer! Can I enter with a 90 visiting visa? or with ESTA online? or obtain a stamp at the american consulate I was even told I might get a BT Visa???? i'm really confused and I cant seem to talk to anyone at the american consulate?

    > I just lost my australian passport and unfortuneately, the 'cost' of this unfortuneate loss, is that you wait for a full passport to be made or use a temporary one to fly directly home. If that costs your more to buy another ticket, and at short notice... then , that is the cost... like any 'loss'. Insurance might cover it.. (have you checked yours ?) - usually they cover a single direct economy journey home and the cost of the passport to travel. The other option would be to get your current visa extended due to the lack of passport, and then again re-purchase or reschedule your trip (yes, it make cost a rescheduling fee, but as you cannot travel/no passport with permission to take the journey). NB the US usually clears immigration in canada, so you will probably just not be allowed to take the plane in the first place, and may well not be allowed to leave any US airport even if you did. All in all, looks like you will be borrowing some money to pay for new flights one way or another - Unless your travel insurance will pay... (which is why we all should have good insurance and read what it contains... but do we .. and always ?)

Love Canada gave you the straight answer. A temporary passport is only valid for travel from the country you are in to your country. In your case from Canada to Australia. If you manage to persuade US immigration officers that you need to pass through the US and there is no other way that's OK. But if there are direct flights available from Canada to Australia that may be a difficult case to prove. The US consulate will give you the most relevant information. What is the reason you cannot talk to them?
