How can I become a citizen of Costa Rica?

I am a U.S citizen and i live in Costa Rica, i would like to get dual citizenship, would the U.S allow it?

  • my husband & his family are Costa rican citizens and if i were to become a citizen here, would i have to reject the U.S citizenship or can i have dual? also, is it nessessary to be a resident in Costa rica before i can apply for citizenship?

  • Answer:

Yes you can be a citizen of both. Costa Rica allows dual citizenship and the US basically doesn't care if you are a citizen of Costa Rica and will not take your citizenship away. This is not true for every set of countries! You do have to live there before you can get citizenship.

US citizens cannot become dual nationals. For you to become a citizen of Costa Rica and continue to live there as a citizen of Costa Rica you would have to renounce your US citizenship before an official at the US Embassy. As it stands now you are a resident alien living in Costa Rica. As no other issues are truly important such as the absolute need to become a citizen of Costa Rica continue as you are now as a resident alien. US citizens cannot be dual nationals with another nation even if you live there. The answer to part two of your question is yes you would have to live there.
