What is a 'P' type Passport?

What does the letter "P" mean in an American passport under type?

  • The first thing that a passport says under the heading Type is P...someone told me this meant blood type. If so, what would your blood type be if is says P?

  • Answer:

    P = personal. There are also Diplomatic and government Official passports, and passports for minors. There is also a special no-fee passport for people asked to go abroad and do work for the government, including the peace corp I believe.

Daniel L appears to be correct. I couldn't find the types listed on the website. But my passport is type 'P' so it make sense to me.

Puppet, prisoner, product. To our government we are all of these. more then likely it is a generic symbole that indicates you're just one of the many millions of regular people and no extra measure are to be taken to secure your life.

There is no blood type "P"... I dont know jack about passports, but my guess would be "personal" if you're using the passport for your own pleasure, rather than using it for business reasons, but what the hell do I know??? lol

The letter "P" simply means "passport." It was put into the US passport format when we envisioned using the same document for other purposes, also, but we finally decided that was a bad idea. All types of US passports - tourist, official, and diplomatic - have the same letter P in the same place. The P also serves sometimes as a fraud detection device. It's funny how some forgers and counterfeiters try to get fancy and change the letter to something else, thinking it has more meaning than it really has.
