How long does it take to prepare for a test like the Foreign Service exam (for US)?

  • I'm studying for the US foreign service exam - basically to be a US Diplomat. I'm just started studying and my scheduled test is on Sept 13th. Any former or current US diplomats out there who have some advice for this adventurous soul?

    There is no set answer on how long it takes to prepare -- it takes as long as it takes for you to pass it :) Basically what I'm saying is, for the most part studying can only make a small difference. The tests (i.e. both written and oral) are geared more for a TYPE of person, rather than a SET of knowledge. For the most part, you are either the type of person who all throughout your life have paid attention to history, foreign policy, international issues, government processes, interpersonal skills, etc, or you're not, and if you're not, it's awfully hard to make up for it just by studying for a few weeks or months. The only way you'll know, however, is by taking the test, so GOOD LUCK! :) There are at least 2 other FSOs out there, so maybe they'll add their 2 cents.

I took it twice, but ended up with other plans. However, I did work with USAID for a while. You really just need a broad base knowledge of everything, the test ranges from geography to computer apps to NGOs to theory and beyond. Make sure you know current events and terror.
