The State Department employs nurses, physician's assistance and doctors and they go abroad to work in US Embassy clinics around the world. I will tell you, having served in 7 Embassies abroad that the currrent nurses employed by the State Department are older, highly experienced and are either working on their second career, already retired from their first or simply looking for something excitiing to do later in life. There are no young, right out of nursing schools employees. The work is often independent and requires a high degree of skill in order to refer the patient to the right doctor without somone else checking their work. As for serving in the Philippines - all Foreign Service Officers are assigned at the discretion of the Department of State. Once you've completed 2 tours you can begin to "bid" on your next assignment but until you are quite senior, it is nearly impossible to pick your country. Good Luck.
