What do I need to register my marriage and change my name on British Passport. SA with British Passport.?
-
I was wondering if someone could give me some advice as most websites and consulates haven't been able to help me. So long story short... I'm a South African with dual citizenship to SA & UK. British passport is from my parents who were born in UK, I was born in SA. I married South African that also has dual SA/British passports. He earned his passport after spending 5 years in UK. Our wedding took place in SA and we currently live in Singapore. My Singapore visa is on my British passport and NOT my SA passport. So I guess the questions I have are.. Do I need to change to my married name on my SA passport before I'm able to change my British passport? Will I be able to change my name and register marriage on British passport in Singapore? What documentation are needed for my British passport name change? Sorry, this all sounds a bit boring but I'm in a bit of a panic as I need my British Passport to travel in and out of Singapore. Your advice would be much appreciated! Thanks for taking the time to help out a stranger. :-)

Answer:
Start at the begining, There is NO requirement to change your name when you get married. It is merely tradition and personal preference. (some countries do not do it, and even do not allow it) IF you choose to change your name (at any time for any reason), one of the accepted proof's is a marriage certificate. (cf deed poll etc) So up to you when and if you change your name in any documentation, just make sure that any flight or reason that you present you passport for, is in the same name as that ID document or the document + Marriage Certifcate (the proof of link between the old name and new name). (honeymooners book tickets as Mr & Mrs, and present old passport + marriage Cert for example) if you want a/all your passports in a new name. present those passports with your Marriage certificate to the UK/SA agencies and have a new one issued, when you come to renew or need to present your visa, you present your new passort, and marriage certifcate to show that you are one and the same person. You could also ask for the visa to be re-issued (do not expect it to be free) inyour new name in the same way. You could also not change anything. You can be known as whatever name you wish in general use/public, but for official/ID purposes use your previous name. Remember, as above some countries do not traditionally change name on marriage (spain, China etc) - children take the 'family' name or combination of parents names.
