Who is responsible for the protection of United States Ambassadors while abroad?
-
I am curious as to whether there is a specific organization in place to protect American ambassadors while they live and work in another country. I know it is not the local military, but is it the USMC (United States Marine Corps) or another armed service or agency, such as the Secret Service. I know that the Secret Service is not responsible for ambassadors of the United States, only foreign dignitaries within the United States. Perhaps a similar such system exists here in Japan? Anyone's assistance with this is much appreciated.

Answer:
The Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security is responsible for "providing a safe and secure environment for the conduct of U.S. foreign policy." The Marine Corps Security Guard works in conjunction with Diplomatic Security and the Regional Security Officer (RSO) at each embassy and consulate to provide security for the Embassy and its staff. Further, private security contractors as well as local police forces are used to provide security for the Embassy facilities and key officers. In Japan, the Japanese National Police provide security for the US Embassy, which includes a Koban directly in front of the US Embassy. They provide patrols outside the fenceline, including surrounding streets. Security contractors conduct individual screening at the gate and main door to the Embassy. Further, USMC Security Guards the entrances to the Embassy.

US Marines only guard the embassies. Not the ambassadors. The host country where an ambassador is assigned provides security forces from their own ranks to guard ambassadors. Some of them are from the police, and others from the military. In countries where hostility exists, it is likely that bodyguards from the ambassador's own country are also assigned to protect ambassadors and their families. They may come from intelligence or other security agencies, but would be on the payroll as chauffeurs or personal assistants.

The US Department of State Diplomatic Security Service is responsible for the protection of a US ambassador. The US Marine Security Guard Detachment focuses on the interior security of the diplomatic post, and is responsible for securing classified materials and for providing protection for United States citizens and United States Government property, reporting via the DSS Regional Security Officer/Post Security Officer.
