  FYI: you have asked this on the US answers not the UK or french/spanish(EU) answers.. But important information is needed from you. - what type of visa do you have in France - why/how did you get it ? - what type of visa do you have in spain - why/how do you have it ? A residence visa is given for a reason, so that reason affects if you can get a new one. You need to follow the rules eg student visa you have to study, a work visa you need to work etc what type of visa do you have, and how much time do you spend in each country and is there anything that you needed to do for those visa (work, study, be with a partner ?) and what type of visa purpose will you get this time ? And yes, a residence visa is for 1 country only, normally for 2 countries, you would need 2 visa's BUT the schengen visa gives you extra benfits automatically in all schengen countries (eg visit for 50% of the year - but there are no border controls so no one is measuring this !). After some years in the EU you may get Permanent residence automatically... So your time on the current visa is needed also. Then someone can give an answer. best regards
