Are all US embassy jobs internal?

  • I'm in canada and wish to work with the US embassy in canada. More precisely as a Commercial specialist. I'm curious are all good jobs within the Embassy published internally and not to the public? Are the goverment jobs permanent as in you can not get fired and will only be promoted to a job to a lower level? What about education? If I decide to do my master degree in a USA university, will the goverment help? I really want to work within the Commercial Trade deparment. Should I take any Us embassy job and then apply internal to a job within my field? Help...any advice is needed

  • Answer:

You would be working for the US government as a Foreign Service National - such jobs are announced within the embassy. If you do not perform well, you can certainly be fired, or demoted. Educational assistance, of some sort or another, is perhaps possible through other mechanisms, but is certainly not guaranteed. It can be easier to move to other positions within the embassy once you are already working there - people will know you and your work habits, and your embassy clearances will already have been completed. What a joke! Lets talk about the latest "Embassy" under construction. Although it sticks out like a sore thumb amongst a background of rubble, death and sorrow..If you were to ask in Baghdad Nobody seems to know what it is. I managed to download a picture after much frustration( I kept getting a message saying "Forbidden Website" ) Which only made me all the more determined. You see miles of cranes and actual work being done (compared to just destruction everywhere else) Anyways this is no ordinary Embassy. When completed it will be larger then Vatican City. Staff over 5,600.00 personal. Plus it's own Police Force, maintenance crew, etc. This actually going to be run and staffed by the top 4 oil companies, that just signed the drilling rights and the plundering of Iraq's oil and gas for a minimum of the next 30 years. So this Embassy will act as the American Oil Co. HQ. for Middle East Operations. When completed, they boast it will be totally self contained with it's own water system, electric grid, air supply and it brags that it will be hardened to withstand a nuclear attack. Do these actions sound like the things people intent on liberating, establishing order and then handing back power to the Iraqi's as quickly as possible? It has been my observation, people that spend over $10Billion on an Embassy, are not very likely to hand it over to who ever the stole it from or allow any locals to work inside without a fight....Mary

www.state.gov to learn the requirements. www.cia.gov www.fbi.gov all are hiring. from the site. Candidates who pass the Oral Assessment must apply for the security clearance required for appointment to the Foreign Service. A comprehensive background investigation, conducted by the U.S. Department of State in cooperation with other federal, state, and local agencies, will provide the information necessary to determine a candidate's suitability for appointment to the Foreign Service and for a Top Secret security clearance. The process considers such factors as: failure to repay a U.S. Government-guaranteed loan or meet tax obligations; failure to register for the Selective Service; past problems with credit or bankruptcy; unsatisfactory employment records; a criminal record or other violations of the law; drug or alcohol abuse; and less than honorable discharge from the armed forces. Candidates who hold dual citizenship, have had extensive travel, education, residence and /or employment overseas, or who have foreign contacts, a foreign-born spouse, immediate family members or relatives who are not citizens of the United States, should be aware that the clearance process will take longer to complete. The background investigation includes interviews with current and previous contacts, supervisors and coworkers. Candidates who do not receive a security clearance are ineligible for appointment. Potential candidates who have any serious issues that may prevent them from receiving a clearance should give some thought to the likelihood of their being found ineligible before starting this process. I know that most US Embassy jobs are handled through the state department and you need to be a us citizen to get one of those jobs. They are changing the way the foreign service exam is administered so check out www.state.gov there will be more info there. I hope this is a start
