What to do about nasty HOA board members?

  • I recently started attending my community HOA meetings. I am a homeowner and consequently a member of the HOA. It is not currently a "big" HOA as our dues are less than $300/year. However, there has been concern in the neighborhood about corruption, secrecy, and general lack of communication between the HOA board the homeowners. So, I decided to selflessly volunteer my time and talent to make an online forum to help communication in the neighborhood. Naturally, it has been well received by the members/homeowners. However, it seems there are a few people on the current HOA board that are unhappy with this forum. They have also been trying to "pull rank" in some feeble way by being rude to me at the HOA meetings supposedly because I'm not an elected board member. Recently, one told me to "shut up" while I was trying to comment on a discussion about the new forum itself, that I developed for free! I've read all kinds of crazy things about HOA's so I'm not sure what to do?

    You have to get yourself voted on the board. HOA's can be good and evil at the same time.

They have to hold elections so, get several people you know and run for those positions. Once you have a few people in there that are not in the " good old boy network", then you can shed light on whats going on and keep the people informed. Don't let them railroad you, they have to abide by certain laws and keeping the members updated on whats happening, how much money they have from the HOA fee's and what its being spent on are all part of it. If they are not, get a lawyer and sue them for breach of contract.

HOA are worthless just parasites than have nothing better to do but harass homeowners and make communities look like "communists track homes".

First, try to remember those people are volunteering their time, just like you are. It's hard to receive criticism on the job you are doing (good or bad), when you are donating your time and working for free. I have found in life, most people are quick to complain, but few will step up and take an active part in correcting the situation. Hang tough for now, find out whether or not your neighbors support you, and convince them to get involved - attend the meetings. As long as your forum is honest and doesn't scream libel, they can see bad behavior with current board, and when the time comes, they vote them out. Just be prepared to be voted in.

That's why I would never move into any place with a HOA. If I want to put a pink flamingo on my lawn that I own I'll be damned if anyones gonna tell me I can't. You seem to now be finding out the other ugly side of HOA's...politics. Give some idiot a little power and they'll abuse it as sure as The Colorado Rockies will finish in last in the NL West.

if i were you i would get out of the hoa . were you asked to join the hoa or did they tell that you must join .i dont belong to a hoa and several people have asked me to join but i told them that i am not interested in joining but they still keep on asking me to join .it,s all up to you.
