Universal health care debate?
-
My class is doing a debate on medical universal health care. The pros and cons and everything in between. I am on the side that is against it. What are some of the pros and cons of Universal health care. We know the arguing side will argue that everyone should have the same health care. What kinda of insurance is affordable for everyone? for each Class- low upper, and middle We need to have strong facts to argue and questions to ask the arguing team. The goal is to convince the teacher if it's a good idea to have universal health care

Answer:
Health care is a limited resource, someone will need to control how much is used. With universal health care, the government controls the amount of care given based on the amount of burden the tax payer can withstand. Also, people have no cost association with the services they receive. People will have the tendency to use the so called free medical services frivolously, causing more rationing of services. Private insurance based care has a cost dissociative pitfall as well. People pay insurance premiums and expect to have unlimited care for every frivolous issue that arises. Health care providers have a tendency to run extra tests because the individual doesn't realize the cost that is being placed on the system. Doctors also use these extra tests to shield themselves from lawsuits. The insurance companies must ration its covered cost in this system or raise rates it charges. When rates increase a potion of the population falls out the bottom and are not able to afford the extra cost. In the private payer based system, the health services are rationed by the persons ability to pay. There is no cost dissociation, because everyone knows how much the services they receive costs. In this system people will forgo preventive care to save money in the short run only to cost more latter. The only real answer is to make people aware of the cost of the services they receive and give them the safety they need in a catastrophic health crisis. Only this will give people the power to control health care costs and their own lives. Bottom line, people need to feel the consequences of poor choices for any system to work. No pain makes it worse, to much makes an unhealthy society.

A government mandate which forces citizens to purchase insurance or face a fine is unconstitutional. The health insurance law requires an amendment to the US Constitution allowing Congress the power to mandate purchasing a private service. Purchasing insurance has nothing to do with health care. Does having auto insurance make a person a better driver?

Against it: The USA has suffered its worst financial crisis for years and constructing a universal health care system that would be suitable would cost billions that the USA does not have. If we take for example Britain most of their debt is tied to their national health care system and it only has a population of over 60 million now imagine a health care system for 300 million.

Unhealthy people are difficult to employ. Unhealthy people have difficulty sustaining employment. As a person's income drops due to poor health, they start to contribute less as part of the tax base. Unhealthy people do poorly in education. Those who door poorly in education rarely make a decent wage. Those who do not make a decent wage don't contribute the same to the economy and the tax burden. Daily health issues become chronic health issues. Chronic health issues become acute health issues. Acute health issues are the most expensive to treat. Intervening earlier is far less expensive that trying to react to severe health crises.

> With Universal health care everyone DOES NOT have the same health care. It's ALWAYS allocated by POLITICAL means. > REAL insurance is affordable. "Insurance" like our GOVERNMENT requires (these are really "pay all my bills" programs, not insurance) is not and is the CAUSE of cost escalation. Find an honest definition of "insurance" and you'll realize almost no American is ALLOWED to have "health INSURANCE." > Measured by MEDICAL outcomes, populations WITHOUT government "insurance" controls are healthier. BEFORE modern-style "health insurance" was created by GOVERNMENT, everyone went to the provider of THEIR OWN choice, PAID him and COULD AFFORD IT.

I'm assuming the debate is the US health care system vs universal care in the US? 1) The survival rates in the US for.. well.. everything are higher than they are in any country with a universal health care system. 2) Universal health care systems are MORE likely to deny life saving treatment ( as are US government health care programs ) than private insurance companies are. 3) The US system pays for a huge part of the world's medical R&D, it's part of why it costs so much here. If the US resorts to a universal system, it seems likely that US spending will end up similar to that of other nations.. and thus there will be a significant reduction in funding available for medical research. 4) Response time. Universal systems are infamous for the waiting period for basic services. Not only is this a problem with time critical treatment, but it also reduces the amount of preventive care. The US health care system has a much higher rate of medical checkups than any other system, probably because people can get an appointment at will. The argument really boils down to quality vs making somebody else pay for it.
