What is jury duty?

What New York State Law requires me to participate in Jury Duty?

  • A friend of mine just finished jury duty qualification and told me it was hell; that the judge screamed at him and told him to sit down when he tried to excuse himself from jury duty and that he felt like a prisoner while going through the process. I can't find the law that requires me to attand jury duty in N.Y. I read Article 16 of the New York State consolidated laws but I all it states in section 501 is: "§ 501. Application of article. Except as otherwise provided, the provisions of this article shall apply to grand and petit jurors in all courts of the unified court system in which a jury may be drawn, whether such courts are of record or not of record." This clearly states that the provisions of Article 16 "SELECTION OF JURORS" applies to "jurors"; as in someone who has already been selected for a jury. These statues do not apply to non-jurors like me; as of this point I am not a juror so it seems to me the courts have no authority unless I become one. Can someone please help clarify the situation.
