ALL Penn State Students need to do mandatory community service- not as a punishment but?

-to change the cult like atmosphere up there and open up blind eyes! Maybe if they make it a graduation requirement for all colleges young people will learn that things like football are not as important as they think now. Their actions show us that is what they think with the riots and comments. I am so sick of the students saying "It's not Joe Pa's problem" and not his fault ! Have they ever heard of the child abuse hotline ? He could have called and he did NOT! He did nothing and earned 1 million a year . Never lost a moments sleep about that. I saw photos- he looked well rested! These students need to learn to do something for someone beside yourself! Nothing bad can come from helping your community like working at a shelter or feeding the homeless. Every person I have ever met who has done this work is proud of what they learned and did. I know people who have helped kids in other countries and found it very fulfilling. Way more that any donation they EVER gave! It is about human interaction. No check or fundraiser can do that! Plus, Penn State does that already like raising money for cancer research etc. Yet they have this notion that FOOTBALL is more important than the little boys who were raped at their school? Why are the teens on here so dead set against doing it? Is it our selfish "all about me" society that teaches this or is that that more of our teens are obese and just plain lazy? I know the reality is you can't teach morals and the institution is NOT going to do that! But if we could reach more people and get people involved- WE ALL COULD MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE,RIGHT? Now hit me with your negatives- I know they are coming!

Answer:
I agree with much of what you have said. I think there is an unhealthy obsession with football in this country, and there have been many instances where football players or other members of the football "organization" have gotten away with some very bad things. I think that football should be removed from university life as it is now - no more football scholarships, no catering to football players, no cheerleaders, no worshiping of the football team. Universities are supposed to be institutions of higher learning, and it is time to get back to that ideal. I think all universities and colleges need to take a hard look at their sports teams, particularly football teams, and make some sweeping changes. I think the adulation given football players and football teams is like a disease, and it can fester and cause all kinds of problems.
