What is the celebration Dasara?

Is gay pride a celebration of something or is it just a general celebration evolved from protests?

  • I've heard it has something to do with the stonewall riots. I know it was originally a movement to promote visiblilty and was almost a kind of protest. Now it seems to just be a celebration. So is there any concensus of what is being celebrated or is it a still half visibility march and half celebration?

  • Answer:

Gay pride is for Gay people. So although straight people may and should join in the celebration of diversity, it is primarily for Gay people to take pride in their accomplishments and act as an example to young gay people to let them know they are far from being alone.

I wasn't going to respond until I saw the last guys statement. Ridiculous. What needs to be put to death is the notion that violence will achieve peace and that difference is bad. I apologize for the fool because they will not recognize thier foolishness.

I believe it's a celebration and protest. Gays are okay people and they are human too. Some of the most caring people may be gay. My only problem with the gay community is how they get offended when straight people want to take pride in being straight, in some cases. I love gay people, but I'm proud of being straight. I could be misunderstanding, just as the gay community could mistake straight pride as gay bashing. But we all are human and should be proud and confident no matter what we are.

Back in the 60's the police in New York used to go and rough up gay partiers just because they could. Like when they used to beat Black people, just because they could. One day the people couldn't take it, they were tired and their National Icon had been buried that day (Judy Garland) So the Police went to beat up these people and were met with resistance, and even violence, and the next day there were more gay people at Stonewall and then more and the police had to finally realize that they couldn't hide their gay bashing anymore and that became the basis for PRIDE. Now, it's really about being given the opportunity to show your true being and having the freedom to do it. So it is a celebration in the same way that people celebrate Martin Luther King... It's a time to remeber when you couldn't celebrate being who or what you are.

We are celebrating our pride and freedom of being who we are. You are also correct about the Stonewall riots. We remember those who stood up for themselves and others on that day.
