Darren, your question(s) is confusing. I'm having a hard time making out what you're talking about. I'll try to respond as best I can to what I think you're saying. The thing about literacy groups and "classes" publishing books is the experience of the people behind the press. Not everyone has the experience to be a publisher. So, the person running the press needs to have years of publishing experience with a real publisher if they're going to make the most of the press and the books they publish. You don't want just anyone publishing your book. You want the most qualified person. So, the people behind these groups and classes need to have a wealth of publishing experience if they're going to be successful. They can easily ruin your book if they don't have experience. No, I don't think it will be a good idea to publish books that have already been rejected by a publisher. If publishers are rejecting a book then it's because the book isn't publishable at the moment. Books need to meet a quality standard before a publisher will publish them. Also, if these books aren't being picked up by a publisher then why would a reader, like me, want to read them? If they're not good enough for the publisher then they're probably not fit for public consumption. There are many magazines that publish short stories and novellas. The good magazines will pay for those stories. There are a lot of good paying magazines that publish nothing but science-fiction and fantasy. There's nothing wrong with getting work published in magazines as long as they pay you for your work. Lastly, don't give up. Tor is not the only publisher out there. Though, to have access to the largest publishers, you'll need a literary agent. Good luck.
