Why are gas prices rising?

Why are people so passive about the rising gas prices?

  • Today's gas prices are a CRIME. Seems like everyone's just saying "oh well, nothing we can do about it" or cutting out vacations and such because they can't afford the gas. Our food and virtually everything is skyrocketing because of gas too. And you all just sit and go ..uuuuhhhh.. Why is no one stepping up to stop this madness? I'm willing to start a revolution if anyone would join--we will stand against this hurt to our economy. People won't just talk about gas strikes, they'll participate in them (no, these don't work immediately because everyone buys gas the next day but they DO increase awareness and eventually change!) Let's petition for more refineries to make prices go down, let's actually come up with viable solutions! Why are people just letting the economy and their money go to waste!?

  • Answer:

Our economy is shot. Part of the reason for the price of gas going up so much is that it takes more american dollars to buy it now. People in europe having been paying this for years. I am not passive about what is going on in this country as far as our failing economy, but I am not going to whine about paying more for a resource we should all be learning to use less of. I take a train to work everyday, drive a small, not flashy, high mpg car and take steps to conserve what I use. I am honestly sick of people who can do these things, but instead drive gas guzzling SUV's and drive when they could find a better, less enviornmentally damaging form of transportation complaining about the rise in gas prices. Also, if we started transporting more food by rail then we would both conserve energy and cut grocery prices. America is responsible for something like 90% of the world's oil usage. That is what is a crime and needs to stop. No I don't like that corrupt insitutions are making money off of hard working people, but I also don't like the sense of entitlement many people have in this regard. Driving is a privledge that we abuse and oil is a resource that we over use. More refinaries? Drilling in Alaska? Yes it is the fault of liberals that the well being of the enviornment and the well being of the world in the long term still ranks as a concern. I would rather pay $4.00- $5.00 per gallon than have a bunch of animals in alaska go extinct because we destroyed their habitate and migration paths. To the person responding below: There are more economical and still affordable cars than your suburban that would fit your family. I know this coming from a large family. Also, I have never paid more than $4,000 for a car and have yet to drive one that gets under 30 mpg highway. There is no need for you to get defensive. If you have to justify your vehicle decision to some random person on the internet than obviously you need to rethink it. Also note that I said I am sick of people who CAN conserve and don't. I live in a large city with ample public transportation and people are STILL driving around in large SUVs that are only transporting one person, regardless of that fact that parking costs upwards of $30 per day.

The rising cost of gas and food is Thanks to our liberal friends. We can't build more refineries nor are we given permission to drill here. Thank you, NIMBY liberals, for this. We appreciate it. Also, the rising cost of food is because of our dear friend, Al Gore, who was the vote tie-breaker on starting the use of ethanol. Ethanol, as you are aware is made from corn, also most everything you eat has some sort of corn derivitive in it... hence, our souring food prices. Thanks again, Al, NIMBY's and other liberal wacko's.

Since you have all the answers and are so willing to criticize others, why haven't you put an end to all this madness?

Why are we "passive?" Well, I don't know about the other circles that I don't run in, but in my circles, I would have to say that the passiveness is because we are busy raising families and working 40 hour or more per week jobs. We are busy making a living, raising our kids and getting them to and from school in one piece. We worry about the safety in schools and the quality of education and how we are going to be able to take a day off work when they are sick. We are worried that the daycare bill is astronomical and still paying on utilities for the winter. We are thinking about what we are going to do during the summer when the kids are home 24/7 and the grocery bill goes up as does the daycare and the summer activity things. Personally, I'm a SAHM and have a daycare in my house, so some of these issues I have solved on my own from my viewpoint, but this is what a good portion of the people I cater to see in their day to day lives. Revolution for them means the quelling of the kids to eat their carrots and spinach and getting them to bed on time despite their wanting to stay up and watch the Disney channel until the wee hours. Yeah, gas prices are phenominal and we are tightening up as much as possible. That what you do when your budget is stretched, you start cutting out the extras and hone in on needs. It happens every once in awhile and it won't last forever. But frankly, I will work on my own little corner of the world. I will be growing a lot more of my food this summer and wasting a lot less. There will be more beans and rice and less beef and pork. That's what I'm doing to "step up to the madness" as well as vote out the jerks who tell us voting for "change" will solve our problems....they fail to mention what kind of change....just change. Great. And GIZMO- I drive a big honkin Suburban because I've got 7 kids. Buying an econimical car is not an option for me...namely what I can affrod (read 'used') is largely not available in my area and because paying for a new more gas friendly car is so astronomically out of reach. I paid 8,000 for my 'burb last year, and I can tell you that skipping the minimum 25K price tag for something more fuel efficient and paying for something that guzzles a bit more gas, is more economical for us in the long run. We mostly paid cash for it, and took out a 1500 loan which we had paid off in 6 months. We saved on the insurance and interest that a car like that would have cost us. And the difference between 25K and 8K buys a hell of a lot of gas. There's more to saving money and the enviroment than just the mileage on a car.

We do not have a shortage of refining capacity right now. The reason gasoline prices have increased, is because the worldwdie price of oil has increased. So what do you want us to do ? Threaten to nuke Canada, Mexico, Russia, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria If they do not sell us oil, for exactly what we want to pay for it ?

Blame the EPA and Al Gore. I wouldnt be surprised if ol' Al had a bunch of people manipulating oil futures to the higher costs so he can have his ethanol, which actually costs more to make than gas. BTW, Al got his money from......OIL. The EPA wont allow us to drill where we need to drill so we remain at the mercy of foriegn oil cartels, and they wont allow any more refineries to be built. No one that could do anything about it will step up because they are probably making money off of it somewhere along the line. Why do you thing the LibDem majority congress shut up about the war after they were elected........because now they are getting in on some of the $ as well.

LOL, If you think gas prices are a crime here, try paying $10 a gallon like they do in Europe. Of course, there is really no comparison between us and them since one of our states (Texas) is larger than every country in Europe, except Russia. The cure of this is not going to happen immediately (or even slowly) but it is to start building nuclear power plants for electricity, build more refineries, and drill for oil in ANWAR and off the coasts of the US. There is enough oil there for the next 500 years if we were allowed to drill for and use it. Your boycott will not accomplish anything because the prices are not the fault of the gas stations nor of the oil companies. While the oil companies are making huge gross profits, their profit margins are no different than 10 years ago, so the net profits they make are small. The other thing to consider in "punishing the oil companies" is that the ones who own 90% of their stock are individual people like you and I as well as retirement funds for teachers, unions and individuals. So the only ones you would really be hurting would be the people who need the money the most. The same goes for the stupid idea that we should take their profits and use it for other means.
