Why to Join Peace Corps?

Why do people join service organizations (like americorps, peace corps, armed forces, etc.)?

  • and HOW CAN WE GET MORE PEOPLE TO JOIN?

  • Answer:

The short answer is for service to God and country. But it goes much deeper; parents often advise them to do it. It really goes well with a resume for future jobs. Companies know they are getting a quality individual.

I am an Eagle Scout and was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity when I was in college. I joined APO because of their ties to the Boy Scouts and the fact I enjoyed helping others. You can't force people to do service, but you can encourage it. . . The only way you make more people do it is improve their quality of life so they feel an oblilgation to serve their fellow man.

The armed services are not exactly "service" organizations. People join them for the training, the money and the chance to kill their country's enemies. Americcorps and the Peace Corps are for people who have high ideals and a desire to make the world a better place peacefully. They don't get paid as well, and they don't get re-enlistment bonuses. (Not that the world wouldn't be a better place if Osama bin Lauden was removed unpeacefully).

Why would u want more people to join the armed forces, when you have more people joining after high school and college. People don't want to join because people know how stupid bush, really is.

To make the world better. A sincere thanks to them, along with our soldiers - even though I don't support the war that they are in.

The need for affiliation and service to the community of mankind is often felt as a calling for the youth of our nation. It's a good thing. If you join, then we got more people to join. If you don't then why ask?

I joined the Army and carried a gun for those that couldn't. I got almost nothing out of it. The army has many jobs that have no civilian equivalent. Not much demand for a missile crewman or tank jockey in town.

Encourage the belief that the action of one person can make a difference. Sometimes the reason many people do not do an action (voting, volunteering, even doing their best in the workplace) is because they don't believe that their actions will make any significant difference in the long run so why bother. In the spirit of 'service' a person must be wiling to serve...having a belief that their actions mean something may not result in instant change but a more enduring one for sure.
