Can I start a club like Bunco?

How can I start a Republican club at my high school?

  • Hi, I am a sophmore in high school, and I want to know how I could start a Republican's club at my high school. Membership will not be an issue- most students are Republican. And we have club time almost every week, will clubs from the gardening club to guitar club to Jr. Civitans, so clubs are in! But I just don't know how to get started. I think I should get a teacher sponsor first? And is there any Republican organization I could contact to get some ideas? What would you do? (And no answers saying that I should start a Democrats club, please!!) Oh, I know this is a lot, but I have another similar question. Since this a Republican club, it will probably attract a LOT of Christians. I am not one, but i don't mind them.. But how can I keep conversations from being completely centered around religion? I want the main focus to be on politics. Thank you!!

  • Answer:

You might need a faculty sponsor, but talk to the principal or any of your history teachers, I'm sure they would give you some good advice. I'd start with the teachers. As far as procedure, talk to some of the presidents of the other clubs you mentioned so you know what you need to in terms of working with the school administration. You might also call your county clerk and ask them if there is a local organization that might be interested in helping out or providing guest speakers to get you started. You can't do anything about who you attract, but if YOU start the club, then you can have influence regarding officers or club leadership. This way, you can decide meeting agendas and keep the focus onto politics. By the way, party labels are only for registered voters that affiliated themselves as such. If you're not old enough to vote, then you're neither a Republican nor a Democrat. Try focusing on liberal/conservative issues as opposed to political party platforms. Inform and discuss, that's the best thing that you can do and hopefully why others will want to join.

If you don't want a lot of religion, don't open a republican club!

Coordinate with the local Republican charter in your area so that your group will be a legitimate affiliate.
