Why does the UK Govt support apartheid?
-
The Scottish Assembly uses UK Taxpayer money to abolish tuition fees, give free prescriptions, abolish the sickness tax (hospital charging for parking), gives its elderly free social care etc., all these not available to the English Taxpayer. The Welsh Assembly caps Tuition Fees for all Welsh Residents no matter where in the UK they go to University, for all EU citizens that study in Wales except the English, free prescriptions for the Welsh etc., etc.. All of the above are financed by a tax on the English that means the English give more money to the Scots and the Welsh than their population and economies warrant. So, the English are denied equality and pay for the privilege of being treated as 'unworthy' of such advantages as the Scots and Welsh enjoy. Is this not apartheid? The English cannot benefit because they are a lesser race, they must pay extra tax to support their own isolation, and to complain forbidden. Just imagine that this was happening in South Afrika: The boers got all the money for free this that and the other, while the Zulu were denied the same privileges but made to pay for the boers to have their rightful dues. You'd be on the streets complaining, boycotting South Afrikan goods and marching for equality, wouldn't you? Yet, the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly are branches of the UK Govt, and the UK Govt funnels the English Tax to these bodies, and says that it is OK. Why does the UK Govt support these apartheid actions and hide behind the veil of 'devolution'. Surely such actions by the UK are condoning apartheid. Your considered thoughts please.

It's an absolute shambles - thats what it is, how come the Welsh, Scots, and Northern Irish recognise the advantages to society of a higher education that the millionaire, out of touch, money grabbing parasites in Westminster? They managed to find enough money to fund capital gains reductions to make their businesses more profitable - why not fund students? Many of whom will be tomorrows doctors, teachers etc - maybe they dont think they will need NHS and state funded education for their families!!!! Even a foreign student pays less to go to Cardiff University than they do going to Sheffield Hallam in Nick's back yard. Why would a foreign student pick an English university when they can go to a Welsh one for around 1/3 of the cost? A Welsh student pays less to go to Sheffield Hallam University than one of Nick's constituents who lives next door to it. Dr Vince - the so callled man with his finger on the pulse of everything has written a policy that even he may not vote for. Nick is returning to the tory roots he once had at university (one that I and millions of other taxpayer funded for him) and the lib dems dont know if they should honour their pledges and stand up and be counted, abstain and cop out or break them and sell out. EDIT - By the way many papers are also calling it apartheid and to a certain extent it is.

England voted for this government not the Scots, there is a grand total of one Con-Lib representative in the entire country of Scotland. The Scottish and Welsh assemblies are doing the correct thing by their constituents if the government that was voted into power in England are not doing the same for you I'm sorry but you have a vote like everyone else; perhaps it might be better for you to vote someone into power that is leaning towards your way of thinking. The majority of the people I know [I reside in Glasgow] would be happy to break away from the union and they try to use their votes appropriately to ensure whoever gets into power is going to be helpful to their cause. The vast majority of the people of Scotland did not vote for either the Liberal Democrats nor the Conservative parties; they got into power due to English voters so you now have to live with it for five years and then you have your chance to change things; although I have no reason to believe you will; the Celts appear to be a little more skeptical to the promises of fools like Cameron and Clegg. I remind you of the old and true adage; " Be careful what you wish for you just might get it! "

It's not apartheid; it's regionalism. The regions have their own parliaments so they can undo some of the excesses of the westminster mob. Getting hysterical about it does no good at all. The English aren't the "lesser race" because they aren't a race. Is it fair? Probably not, but if other parts of the country (other than the south east) had their own parliaments, they'd do the same thing.

Perhaps the English simply view it as 'the white mans burden'.

Apartheid is the wrong word, but the point you are making is a fair one. The reason we have devolution is because the Labour party who introduced the current arrangements wanted to keep the UK in one piece because of the strong Labour vote in Scotland and Wales which they didn't want to lose from Westminster. At the same time though they had to make concessions to the Scots and Welsh who wanted more independence. What we got was a messy arrangement that does not benefit the English. If you recall, there was talk at the time of Scottish devolution of regional assemblies in England as a sort of counterpart, but nobody was interested and the idea folded. As an English person I am often offended by the anti English sentiments of many Scots, although I daresay they'd say that's mutual. My personal preference would be for more complete devolution and economic independence, particularly for Scotland. I'm not sure that Wales is big enough for complete independence. Frankly though, if the Scots think they can do better without the support of the English I think they deserve the chance to prove it.

Not convinced 'apartheid ' is the right word. Maybe the Scots and the Welsh are considered disadvantaged so they need all the help they can get. The EU is more about politicians getting whatever they can for their own group of people, it is not a method of fair politics. Remember seeing that on Yes Prime Minister. 'Snouts in the trough' was the expression used.
