What does the fourth of July mean to you?

What does the 4th of July in America mean to you?

  • Me I was not born in this great country. Instead I had to take a test and pass it in order to be sworn in as a citizen some 24 years ago. It is still a city of liberty that is set on a hill and a shining example of what liberty and democracy means for a people that can choose at certain points in time how their country governs its people. What a gift that is not just for the past and present geneartion, but for the future generation as well..

  • Answer:

Its a day of remembrance to me and my family. I made it a point to have my children help me decorate fallen veterans graves. Two of my sons went on to become military men. They followed in the footsteps of their father, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers. I am 80% disabled from combat incurred injuries. The price I am paying for your freedom was worth every bit of the sacrifices all of us military people made and this day brings that vividly to my mind. God bless America, may she ever be that bright shining city on a hill!

It is a day to remember that freedom is something that should not be taken for granted. We must not become complacent about what this country has been built upon. It was not given to us, but it can slip away in a blink of an eye. "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism." ~Howard Zinn

Q

The Fourth is a time for remembrance and reflection for me. I still marvel at how a band of colonial rebels bound together by a commitment to democratic principles and a zeal for liberty, managed to successfully gain independence from the pre-eminent political power of the eighteenth century. The Fourth should be a time of civic celebration and renewal. We should all reflect on the sacrifice of our Founders, take the time to familiarize ourselves with the text of the Declaration of Independence, and recommit ourselves to upholding the ideals expressed in that document.

It is an other day off! and a longer weekend than usual. It is a day to be with our families, make bbq's and drink Mexican beers!

I think about the Declaration of Independence, and how everyone should read that incredible document... I think about the 1st American Revolution, and how grateful I am that a rag-tag bunch of colonists were willing to sacrifice everything in order to free their families and their descendants from oppressive totalitarianism... I always think of those who signed the Declaration itself, knowing that it would amount to a death sentence for them, and their families, should their revolution fail! I think about the solemnity they must have felt as they resolved their plans of leading the ill-equipped colonies into full-scale war against such a formidable opponent. The 4th is a day to remember our duty as citizens, as the last line of defense against a tyrannical government. May we remain always vigilant! Celebrate your second amendment, buy a rifle tomorrow when the stores re-open. You might thank yourself when the economy begins to implode in another couple of months.
