What is the American Dream?

Has everyone forgotten what the "American Dream" was?

  • http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/01/13/downward-mobility-pushing-american-dream-out-reach/ "Such findings call into question the continued viability of what has long been known as the American Dream: the notion that you can own your own home and car, make ends meet and still have enough left over to take the kids annually to Disneyland, or someplace else fun, for a summer vacation." EXCUSE ME?! That's the current vision of the American Dream? Oh how The Mighty have fallen! The American sheep have bought into the corporate/government advertising that consumerism is the American Dream? Personally I am appalled. The American Dream had (once upon a time) to do more with being Sovereign on your own land, exercising your Rights, upon which government could not trespass. Had to do with FREEDOM. Not being in debt-slavery to The Man, trying to keep up with the neighbors in level of debt-ridden consumer spending. Is there no hope that anyone remembers what the American dream was? Are we now doomed to becoming slaves to upward mobility? Take your drug test, obey the dress code, wear the tie which is a symbolic noose, and of course care more about your FICO credit score than if you have enough food to make it through the winter like your grandparents did. They probably had a shotgun too; does that mean your ancestors were survivalist wackos? That could get you on a watch list at DHS...... Jeesh! Where's Ben Cartwright when you need him? And why are we American Men not him? Why do we put up with this metrosexual nonsense?

  • Answer:

Maybe people just set their sites too high because of easy credit. They wanted the granite counter tops and ever larger homes. They wanted a new car every couple of years. Maybe they need to return to common sense and reality. Some people still live within their income and did throughout the easy credit bubble. These people aren't facing the same problems as those who decided to move up the property ladder. The temptation was there and much of the economy was built on ever expanding home ownership and buying new cars consistently. Predatory lending led to the downfall of many people. Maybe people just need to set their sights a little lower. Some day everything will level off as it always does. Prices will eventually have to be more in line with average incomes or nobody will stay in business in this country. The market has out priced itself and wages didn't go up along with them. It had to come to an end. I get the feeling our lifestyles are trading places with China and India. I hate the credit score. It would seem to me the old way worked fine. Either people pay their bills or they don't. The credit score is meant to manipulate people in the way the spend their money and what they must do to have a good score.

The American Dream has always been a myth. Remember the term only became popular in the 1960s and that it was indeed intended to describe consumerism. Little boxes. Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes made of ticky tacky, Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes all the same. There's a green one and a pink one And a blue one and a yellow one, And they're all made out of ticky tacky And they all look just the same. And the people in the houses All went to the university, Where they were put in boxes And they came out all the same, And there's doctors and lawyers, And business executives, And they're all made out of ticky tacky And they all look just the same. And they all play on the golf course And drink their martinis dry, And they all have pretty children And the children go to school, And the children go to summer camp And then to the university, Where they are put in boxes And they come out all the same. And the boys go into business And marry and raise a family In boxes made of ticky tacky And they all look just the same. There's a green one and a pink one And a blue one and a yellow one, And they're all made out of ticky tacky And they all look just the same.

Yeah....but when you first mention hard work, they all look at you like you were an Alien or something

It matters not what things we own. Some Power-mongering Rulers own US. ! Americans are now slaves, all of us. You are right. Our Founders rejected mere materialism, as they rejected corporations. Now we are owned by corporations.

I really dislike when people grand stand their opinion by pretending its a question they have to ask. It really gets bad when they type four or five paragraphs full of rude insults and would-be intellect, and they top it off with a link to a news story its supposed to represent. I would have to say that we all know what the American Dream was... so the answer is: No.

Excellent point my friend. You can't get much more shallow than that idiotic definition. Trade your sovereignty for a false sense of security? I've run into a few 'men' over the years who said they'd prefer going back to prison where they didn't have to worry about job hunting or medical or where their next meal was coming from. I always liked Hoss. Laid back and friendly..just don't do him wrong or you're in big trouble! lol!

I don't believe the American dream was ever exactly the same for everyone and I don't believe everyone has a chance at it. My American dream is to be debt free, not have credit cards, pay with cash and only when I can afford it. I don't care about credit being good when you owe a ton of money. I think good credit should be when you don't owe on credit cards and have debt all over the place. My American dream doesn't match a lot of other peoples. I prefer being free of credit cards and all that "stuff".
