What is quality education?

What's the quality of higher education in INDIA?

  • The recent QS Rankings of world universities goes as follows: 1.University of Cambridge 2.Harvard 3.Yale . . . . 47.Peking university . 187:IIT Bombay So this is the condition!!! Just 1 university in TOP 200. India started 8 new IITs, 7 new IIMs, 15 new central universities, increased the intake of all central higher institutes by 54% in last 3 years, fund allocation for education Rs 81000 crore (during 11th five year plan); yet the situation remains depressing......WHY IS IT SO???Why isn't the focus on quality??? Views please....

The criteria taken for the assessment are not known. The situations of learning and imparting knowledge and skills vary across the globe, not just about the resources but basic capacity of the people learning / teaching etc, as well. One would be astonished with the high performance of students in CET wherefore they had to assign cut off marks at 90 plus, to absorb the contestants into available seats across the territory! In fact a popular VC told once in a high level meeting that the BCs have already achieved massive seats under merit / general pool and the caste quota was superfluous any more ! The caste factor is played for political purposes only here. So with all the handicaps of lax facilities in average institutions, political / aristocratic interference in administration (including appointment of less talented teachers) and so forth, still the performance of our youth are of high standards. The way they fit into various skilled jobs across the globe is testimony enough. It is not just the foreign educated ones who get such jobs. There are many many local geniuses here, who also go abroad for high paid jobs. We should not feel pulled down by rankings of some body whose choice of criteria, assigning weigtages to them, probable subjectivity of assessment etc may have vitiated the rankings. The over zealous flash of western medicos about a Delhi bug posing health hazard is a very recent example of stark duplicity of approach. The Indian experts rightly reacted if the AIDS or Avian / Swine flus ever named after the country / city of their first incidence in humans? Why do they want to call it the Delhi thing, particularly at a time when our medical institutions are attracting people across the globe with cheap and best treatment services? So it would be too naive to overplay the importance of some data generated somewhere and blame our men. Yes many of them are commercial, but so are those in other countries. Many guys going to Aussie for special courses find that the institutions are no better than the ones in our small towns! But we should indeed improve our system progressively, not because someone says we are poor, but because we can still do better, with the talents available domestically!

When caste politics has entered the domain of the prestigious IITs and IIMs,the standards of entrants and consequently the standards of the institutions themselves in terms of infrastructure, faculty and the participants themselves have perforce fallen to abysmal levels. As it is our other private institutions offering professional and vocational courses have become money spinning rackets what with the super corrupt bodies like the AICTE and the Medical Council of India according approvals to such higher education to political leaders' personal and family trusts' to start "capitation fee colleges" which start operations without proper infrastructure and use their clout by relying on Government colleges and hospitals to provide training to students. What focus on quality are you talking about when all the focus is on making money hand over fist.Added to that our courts too by their ad hoc rulings and verdicts help these factories to get away with ---.The less said the better. We should be satisfied and seek consolation in the fact that one of our Institutions has been placed at rank 187 because there are 313 other institutions lower and worse than that when the ranking just covers only 500 colleges/universities in number. Have a Great Day.

India is hyped for no reason. Our quality of faculty is really astonishing. We say about infrastructure, but that comes later. Even if we will have the infrastructure, the same rotten teaching staff will man the affairs. And even if we get the faculties from abroad, we will pollute their minds also and ensure that the quality of education continues to suffer. Same is the case with our doctors. We are only experts in Cricket.

I hate to post suspicion without evidence; however in this case I have heard it so often I must do so. The suspicion in the UK is that a lot of foreign "qualifications" are gained by bribes and this includes the Asian subcontinent. It comes to light often in the medical profession here in the UK when we find incompetent medics with full "qualifications" practising in the UK . I repeat I have no proof except disaster stories reported in the British press.

Money. When it comes to problems like that in any organization whether it be government, private enterprise, religions or educational organizations, the bottom line is always the money. If the quality of the university is that low it is because both the expectations as well as the finances of the institution is low. Very low.

Many British people are concerned about the level of "Education" coming from India to the UK. It seems they can learn OK in some cases but the creativity level is lacking

they are just earning money, they have nothing to do with education & research

if it was so great, they would not be seeking education here and in other european countries.taking our education and going back and becoming a hindrance to us instead of asset. this is only my opinion
