Answer:
Officers hurt on job By Patrick Cronin [email protected] HAMPTON -- Two Hampton police officers were injured last week while on the job, one in a scuffle with a convicted sex offender and the other in a motorcycle accident. Hampton Police Capt. Richard Sawyer said officer Richard Bateman suffered a wrist injury. Officer Michael Verrocci may have a broken foot. Both officers will be out on injury until they are medically cleared to return to work, Sawyer said. Bateman, a part-time officer with the department, injured his wrist while on assignment Aug. 19 at Hampton Beach. Sawyer said Bateman was called to the area of N Street to break up a potential fight between two men. "One of the men was trying to engage the other one into a fight by pushing him," Sawyer said. When Batemen tried to take the alleged instigator, Philip McManus, 27, of Hampton, into custody he put up a fight that led to Bateman's wrist injury. "He resisted arrest and officer Bateman was forced to spray him with OC spray in order to get him under control," Sawyer said. McManus, who was allegedly intoxicated at the time of his arrest, was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He was also charged with failing to notify police of his new address, which he is required to do as a convicted sex offender. Sawyer said officer Verrocci was injured in an accident while on motorcycle patrol Aug. 16 at the beach. "Officer Verrocci was driving northbound in the left lane on Ocean Boulevard when a vehicle in the right lane turned into his lane without signaling," Sawyer said. "The man cut in front of (Verrocci), physically striking the motorcycle." Sawyer said the impact caused Verrocci to fall off the motorcycle, pinning his foot right up against the car. The driver, Michael Bennett, 18, of Burlington, Mass., was not arrested, but was issued a summons for an unsafe lane change.
