Exactly what is The Media?

• What is the media? I mean, I know the media is like a nick name for what? the news? the magazines? can some one please give me a detailed explination of what the media is, what it does, how it makes money, who runs it, is the gouvernment involved at all? if so, in what way. Can the media say what ever they want? like freedom of speach? or are their rules in place, so that they can't bring up touchy subjects, for example, Something bad about bush? Does the gouvernment control the media kind of thing... I know a lot of people that say things like, The gouvernment is hiding things & the media is trying to throw us off from what is really going on, kinda deal. or that the media can't say bad things about our gouvernement & can't say bad things about bush. is that true? is the media just a business? just a company?
