How can I gain experience to be a paralegal?

How can a 17 year old gain experience in Journalism?

  • I'm 17, I have 1 year left in Secondary School (High School) and then I will be going to University to study Journalism. I want to gain some experience in Journalism as soon as I can. I would like to be a Political/ Current Affairs Journalist in a newspaper. I would also like to present my own show on a Radio Station. How can I gain some experience to help me in my future career?

  • Answer:

Call the editor of your local paper and see if you can freelance. Maybe write some news about a play, concert or what the science club is doing. Small town papers love that, but don't always have the staff to cover it.

You could take a class on it, or you could ask a professional.

Go to a war zone and report what happens. Investigate government crimes and cover-ups and see what danger you can put yourself into (watch the movie "Silkwood") Blow as many whistles and dig up the deepest dirt and don't stop until you make the buggers cry ! You have to live life in order to "get experience", it isn't something handed to you or comes in a degree. Investigate the child rapes in Ireland by Catholic priests, that'll get you experience.

Write for your school newspaper, if you have one. Also, try contacting editors at your university's paper. Usually, they are more than happy to bring new reporters under their wing. That's how I got started. It's actually a great way to begin networking, and that's a main aspect of being a good journalist--knowing people. The journalism professors will be able to help you get into contact with local, and maybe even national, news sources. You would be surprised. Good luck!

High schools do have their own newspaper. I wrote for one in high school. You can look for an internship at a large daily newspaper.

write editorials for your local newspaper and/or run a blog. Just be sure and do your research for your articles
