How free and fair is Indian Media, why they blacked out a critical news about Sonia?

Corruption suspect Sonia morphs into a crusader - The New Indian Express, Sunday, 01 May 2011 “All across India, people are saying enough is enough. And suddenly the unthinkable is starting to happen. People considered above reproach or at least untouchable, are coming under the judicial crosshairs. And the latest high-profile target is one of the biggest fish of all, Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi, currently No. 9 on the Forbes list of the World’s Most Powerful People..” Says, Cleo Paskal writing in the online news website Huffington Post on the corruption charges against Sonia Gandhi. Award-winning journalist, Paskal writes for Sunday Times, Telegraph and the Economist. Her books have won multiple awards. An Associate Fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, London, the US Department of State, those consulting her include US Department of Energy, US Army War College, UK Ministry of Defence, UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, UK Defence Academy, EU, NATO, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the heads of many major corporations, and intelligence professionals from over 30 countries. She blogs in Huffington Post, the world’s third most popular news website that commands over 38 million visitors viewing half-a-billion pages every month. Founded in 2005, it became instant success. In February this year, AOL acquired it for $315 million (`1,450 crore). In 2008, the Observer, London, rated Huffington Post, the winner of several awards, as the worlds’ best blog! Paskal notices the “growing, persistent murmurs about questionable business deals and inexplicable exponential jumps in the personal wealth of her and her family. Paskal recalls “the ground-breaking articles” that M D Nalapat, a senior journalist, had written about Sonia in 1995 in “the Times of India”.. Paskal also emphasises Nalapat’s view that “her desire for power wasn’t simply altruistic and that the wealth not only of her, but of her Italian relatives, rose stratospherically after Rajiv Gandhi became prime minister in 1984”. Paskal points out that while his articles were undisputed; Nalapat was forced out of journalism in 1998 when, as he had predicted, Sonia took over the Congress. Paskal cites the “public questions from another highly reputed source, Sten Lindstrom, Sweden’s special prosecutor”, who investigated the Bofors pay-off scam. Paskal points out Lindstrom’s interview in 1998 in which he had said that “the Gandhis, particularly now Sonia, should explain how Quattrocchi-owned companies got such fat sums as payoffs from the Bofors deal. “But the most serious threat to Sonia,” warns Paskal, “is now lying on the desk of the Prime Minister of India.” That is Dr Subramanian Swamy’s written request to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for sanction to prosecute Sonia for corruption. In a meticulously researched 200-plus page submission, Dr Swamy alleges Sonia Gandhi has been involved in corruption in India since 1972 and personally benefited from the Bofors scam (1986), has held billions in non-Indian bank accounts since at least 1991, illegally profited from the Iraqi oil-for-food deals (2002), and even accessed KGB payoffs during the Cold War.” Obviously Paskal has read the complaint thoroughly. Finally, the mainstream media has blacked out Dr Swamy’s “meticulous” complaint against Sonia. A reader’s gratitude to Paskal for “shedding light on an issue that is taboo in Indian mainstream media” tells the true story. ---------- Now how fair and free the Indian Media that complained of a petty bribe by BJP for the rath yathra? Do you believe they are objective in their reporting ethics?

Answer:
Journalists in India are biased as they are not exposed to investigative journalism. They simply gather some exciting news for reporting to boost up the sales of their magazines or media. Moreover, most of the magazines and journals are virtually under the control of the ruling UPA and hence they are reluctant to go against the UPA chairperson Sonia who is well known for her corruption.Congress men are not questioning her as they are all sycophants.

Definitely Indian media is absolutely in Congi or congi allinace control. So definitely they wont publish news which is in the interest of the common man. They sell the news........ They didnt raised voice about Sonia's health condition because if they questioned they will not survive and within 2-3 days they will get a alert from any1 govt authoity..... Here none should think any party. There are many good works done y many NGO's but nobody highlights this....

what i think is there is no free n fair media possible.... it because media groups are business groups not for social service groups....!!! media show news only which earn revenue for channel. Depends on many criteria, that who are sponsor of particular media group? depends on viewers classification... sensationalism to attract viewers to not change there channel how many follower increase on social sites like twitter, facebook n x,y,z sites... back to the main question that why they blacked out a critical news about Sonia...well i am not sure whether you watch videos related with her illness n travelling of USA n about Robert Vadera...there are many videos circulate in different social sites...same many videos circulate against opposition leaders n Swiss banks and youguru baba ramdev n about anna hazare also... but none of news channels circulate that videos on there channels, because on what ground they shown these videos n news, which could be effect on there sponsors benefits in all aspects?? its similar treatment with Sonia Gandhi. many make allegation that after baba ramdev's fast she went to "secret Europe tour" to settle there "secure money"....same many believes that 4 cabinet minsters went to the airport for baba ramdev because ramdev know in which banks Sonia have secure money, so he easily blackmail Gandhi family n dynasty...so all four minster went for settle deal with him... n there is more...endless "news".... here i remember one dialog of Movie Rann...in last scene Amitabh Bachchan (who play channel editor n owner's role) said In media, previously Money was "instrument"/ "Way" to getting "News"(free n fair )/Aim ...now Money is Aim n news are instrument!!! so conclusively i said, there is No free and fair is Indian Media but hard to say that its only for one political party...!!! they hiding much more than that!

While the fourth estate,in the past, has always had an impeccable reputation for courage, unbiased coverage, honesty etc. it has over the years moved to partisan reportage depending on the ad revenues. Now with the media having branched out into TV,the net and so on,what has been dubbed probably by some wag as "Paid Journalism" is here to stay, initially though it was confined to showering praises on the Party and an individual therein who would stand to benefit by the flattery. Now it has been refined to Cover-Up or simply "Black-Out" adverse information and gossip and rumors doing the rounds among the masses. It is under this category of journalism the news about Sonia has been suppressed or should I say, this corrupt pillar of democracy acts as if nothing has happened.Of course,it could also be and most likely is,that goons have been let loose to ensure that right from the owners of the publication down to the errand boy, keep a tight lip for fear of their lives. This is not restricted to the Congress alone. The BJP too will be no piker when it involves them or any of their functionary. Have a Good Day. Edit:-I would like to add that once a person enters politics, becomes a public figure and takes center stage, that person's life becomes an open book and except for certain very personal matters, every other bit of happening including anything to do with their health also becomes public because the followers need to know whether there is anything serious the matter with their leader. And the best judge of that part is the people and not the coterie which covers up anything and everything about the leaders selectively. Edit:-Mr.Dilli,All I mentioned was that some wag DUBBED it as "P J".And that was in a humorous vein.Nothing was said about who lodged the complaint.I am well aware as to who filed the complaint. And I too have read the news item you mentioned.I agree that I am illiterate and ignorant but not to the extent you presume me to be so.It is unfortunate that you choose to pass comments without reading fully or properly like in the matter of my post in the Hindu under the name Raj Kumar.

I have read long ago in a sociological analysis, about how the people in developed countries, particularly the neo rich, who sprang up to higher levels after the technological revolutions, desired for peace around, free form conflicts in order to enjoy the wealth they had earned by hard work! The intent was overtly on selfish wishes to enjoy their riches rather than any concern for social harmony for its own sake! Media is now a big business and they don't want to earn the wrath of power centres that may affect their business! Do you recall the condemnation of Romans by Cassius in Shakespeare's Julius Ceasar: "Romans now lack thews and limbs like their ancestors!" That is the state of the media that once played hero in critical times of history! Mr Raj Kish, the Paid News complaint was not raised by any "wag" but serious people right from the Press men themselves, like a whiff of fresh air amidst the sultry business interests in their own domain! See The Hindu article: Paid news, cash-for-votes, and Election Commission: http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/Readers-Editor/article1685010.ece Extract: Over the last 18 months, the exposure of the unethical practice of publishing or broadcasting ‘paid news' has created awareness among the people about how it corrupts the press as well as the democratic process. xxxx ‘Paid news,' selling news space under the table to candidates and dishonestly presenting the paid-for advertising as news, is a relatively recent arrival on the Indian electoral scene. Besides giving the client an advantage over the rival contestants, it helps him or her hide the money spent on paid news from the mandatory electoral expenditure accounts, thereby violating electoral laws. The Hindu played a key role in taking the issue to larger sections of people. Many journalists pressed for the intervention of organisations such as the Editors' Guild, besides the Press Council of India and the Election Commission, to stigmatise and put an end to the corrupt practice and initiate action against the guilty. It is heartening that the Election Commission has taken some initial steps to end the menace. Edit: It is interesting that the congress protagonist had called the news item as ''opposition rant'' while the opposition is still to take it up for any serious publicity! Pakal is not Indian opposition party person anyway! Now people would judge who fools whom. Edir: Mr Raj I only clarified the use of word wag was inappropriate as it didn't appear to be humour but dilution of the serious issue in my view. You are repeatedly pointing to your Hindu post which I said I could not find and I stand by that. I was really interested to see your response and immediately searched the site and found two other Kumars only! May be your post was still under moderation and did not appear when I visited and I have no need to deny any truth! I can understand that your recent uncharitable comments on me would please some people here and I don't mind a little caricature about me too in the forum!
Bye pals
This is the problem with BJP supporters. They take it as their birth right to throw stones and abuses on others. But start crying foul as soon as someone retaliates.

Its a long one to read but I am sure this will nothing more than usual rant against congress. India has thousands of courts, and I am sure judiciary is capable of taking care of Sonia Gandhi as well. Either all the opposition members are part of so called fake corruption allegation or they are impotent. These Swamies are Babas are good for tea time pass but no one takes them seriously. They are fit for nothing more than creating a sensation. Purchasing media is in open light where BJP officials tried to purchase journalists but failed miserably. So now entire India know who is involved in corrupt practices to get favors from media and then their supporters rant shamelessly against Congress to defend BJP.

India is a Democracy. Any news Chelan will publish news keeping the public sentiment in high esteem. Sonia Gandhi has attained a public honor and prestige compare to Gandhi, the father of the Nation by her clever policy of sacrificing the highest post of PM after winning the election with grand success. The corruption of black money is already in the news Chelan in India. But to speak against Sonia without specific proof is an insult to a leader of highest order whose act is comparable to M.Gandhi.

May be the reason that the people's faith in the All India Institute of Medicines- the Prime Medical Centre catering to the Political VVIPs will be shaken. Even Politicians are human beings and one should not encroach upon their privacy beyond certain limits.
