Answer:
He pretty much says the opposite of Birling's beliefs, which is why Eric says that Birling had told them that "a man should make his own way". The Inspector told them that "there are millions and millions and millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths and then goes on to say that "we don't live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other" which is basically the opposite of Birling's strong Capitalist views. Sheila seems to agree with the Inspector to an extent and feels guilty, hence why she is crying, and both her and Eric like to break the mould and speak their opinions about things which is why Sheila doesn't really say selfish things like her father does, and why Eric begins to side with her at the end and kind of turns against their dad. Eric says that he is ashamed and tries to pin the blame on his family, so I don't really think that he really realises what he has done and he is said to be "brooding" so he seems to be miserable, so that covers their reactions. Mrs Birling is described as being a "cold" woman so I think that she is more worried about getting herself into trouble and than the young girl dying which is why she is "collapsed" into the chair. I think that Birling is embarrassed by how the Inspector talked to him and also nervous because he tries to put on a brave face by being the only "active" but his nerves show when he has a drink. Lastly, I would say that Gerald was avoiding the Inspector, obviously, because he left, and that he was in denial of driving the girl to take her own life because he challenges the Inspector by coming up with theories about him not being real, and there being more than one girl. It'll be easy to write this essay when you get into the swing of it, there's loads to write about. Good luck and I hope this helped!
