How important are sports on my college resume?

If I helped coordinate a sports writing seminar at the Final Four, how would I include that on my resume?

  • I'm trying to figure out where I would put something like this on my resume. During the week of the NCAA Men's Final Four, I assisted a renowned sports writer in the U.S. Basketball Writers Association with a sports journalism seminar that drew high school and college students from areas surrounding Indianapolis. With this, I was able to attend the Final Four games with a media credential and cover the games myself. I did not participate in the seminar itself; I just helped organize it. As an aspiring broadcast journalist, should I include this on my resume? And if I should, what should I omit from my resume? I already have solid internships from a TV station, a radio station, and assisting with a TV show that airs throughout the state I go to school in. I also have a job listed as a caller from a telefund, and a few awards. And for the record, I'm a senior in college set to graduate in a month, and this question is geared towards my general resume. For more specific resumes, I plan on tweaking it according to the position I'm aiming for.

  • Answer:

I'd only include this on your resume for a position as a 'producer'. However, I'd bring it up at any interview that you manage to get. BTW: If you don't already have a snail-mail letter from the sports writer thanking you for your assistance, then get one as soon as you can. Do the same for each position without a documented reference. Write it for them and include a SASE to make it easier for them to respond.
