Do you think a high school yearbook has the right to...?

Do you think a high school yearbook has the right to quote a gay student whose quote acknowledges that he is homosexual, even if said student's parents cannot accept that their son is gay (instead pretending that their son is straight and avoiding the issue with their son). Our yearbook this year originally had a very insightful quote from this guy, but administration eventually overruled us and prevented us from publishing it, saying that there is a risk the parents of the gay student would sue the school district for slander and defamation. But our school newspaper quoted him in half of their issues, and all of his quotes had to do with him being gay. More importantly, this year was his senior year. He also officially came out this year (but many people already knew he was gay) and dramatically changed the way he dressed to something more flamboyant. Yes, he actually is gay. No, it is not a phase. So what do you think? Did administration cross the line and overuse their authority, or was it right for them to tell the yearbook staff to take the quote out?

Answer:
well if it was a direct quote from the kid and he wanted it in there, or at least wouln'd lie and say he didnt say it, then there is no case for slander. However the school has ultimate authority over yearbooks and they can act like scared little bitches if they want :)

If you interviewed him and he gave you consent to use his words then your fine, the right to free speech and freedom of the press completely covers it.

I think it depends on the actual quote. If it was something stupid like "I like dick." it should obviously be banned, as it would for a straight girl. I think it should have been able to be published, just as a quote about a straight student embracing their sexuality should have been published. Just because he's gay doesn't mean he should be treated differently at all. If the adults of the world can't allow open homosexuality, how are the kids supposed to accept it? Kudoss to this gay man for being so comfortably open, even when his parents don't agree with it :)

Complicated, as parents are involved in his crime of being gay--that is, they can not accept it. As the parents pay the taxes that support the school, they have a right to defend themselves against this accusation of a heinous crime ( being a parent of a gay child ). And, also a right to privacy. And, is this true? Administrators have to be cautious as the f----lawyers rule this country.

Personally, I think the teacher who was responsible for the yearbook staff was not doing a good job of supervising his/her students and should be fired. The school has every right to exercise their authority over a school publication.

It's a "high school yearbook" for crying out loud. Keep the "politically correct" politics out of it. Controversy belongs to other publications and a year book for kids should be showing the good times, the fun of the year, kids being kids, and leave the freakin sex stuff out of it okay? We have "Hustler", we have "Penthouse" we have other mags and internet sites for that. If the kiddies were all that interested in "one" boy's opinion they can get the same cliche's from tabloids and mags outside of the school. The kid has nothing new to say and there would be no great words of wisdom about oral and anal sex to be brought forward to enlighten a high school full of teenagers.(the misrepresentation of agape' is not the love involved in homosexuality) The administration had a good reason to veto the quote, the yearbook isn't about sex, a sexual lifestyle, or a politically correct stance that is currently a fad. It's about a bunch of kids living a life ten months of the year in an educational facility; and the fun they had. A documentation of memories. Leave it alone as a platform for the homosexuals; that is not needed.
