Is it hard to become a Music Journalist?

What does it take to become a music journalist?

  • That's my life goal. I already write a blog about rock music (generally). How do I apply myself out there into the journalism world? I don't have any qualifications at the moment, does this restrict me? I am currently living in Ireland, but I don't plan on staying ! (like the most of us Irish at the moment!) Please any information would be great.

    I can't tell from your question if you've been to college or are wondering what courses to take. If you haven't been, take both music and journalism courses. Talk to professors in both departments to find out what you need to do, what courses to take, what community groups/events you should become involved with, people you should meet. If you're not headed to college or have already been, I'd think someone in the community - perhaps at a college - would still be willing to talk to you and give you some guidance. You might even get some tips through the local public radio station. To make yourself more marketable, become familiar with as many kinds of music as you can, including classical and jazz. There are a lot of folks out there who love music and love to write and would like to combine it into one great career, so there's a lot of competition.
