How to get work experience with a magazine company?

How to get journalism experience for University?

• Ok so I really want to study journalism at Uni after I have completed my A levels and I have contacted the Uni that I wanted to go to and asked if they are expecting to see a portfolio of my work and they replied back saying that 'It wasn't necessary' but when I do write my application letter that they are keen on hearing past writing experience like working for the school magazine, local newspaper, local radio stations... They also like to see printed version of my work if I get an interview. However I'm pretty sure that the local newspaper does not want a report of me ranting about how much ICT and English Lit coursework I have. I have no idea what I'm going to write about :( Or how I'm going to go about to get my work published :/ One of my teachers gave me this notice about a company that's picking 10 students from the U.K to report at the paralympics but I read the terms and conditions on the website and it states clearly that I 'Must have an interest in sport' (I schemed all of my p.e classes last year). Just any advice from students that are studying journalism now on how they got experience would be greatly appreciated. I would mostly like to report on subjects such as Fashion or the other typical media platforms such as tabloid newspapers and magazines.
