The Difference between a freelancer and an Employee is that the Former is Self employed and offers their services to a firm for a firm the Freelancer sets, whereas an Employee is Hired by the firm to work in that employer and receive a pay that they choose. If you are sure freelancing is the thing you want, think again. Often, people confuse being Self employed as a freelancer with being employed in multiple jobs. They are both entirely different things. If you are wanting to do Freelance work, then you need to set yourself up as a Sole Trader. So before you do any prospect of finding work, you need to do that first: ========= First off, Get your head examined. Have you decided you want to work for yourself because you had a bad day at work, or because you want a guarantee of income, or you want less work. If you answered Yes, Freelancing is not for you. As a writer and employee, you have an accountant to do the bills, and Admin Staff to answer the phone, and a Sales Team to sell the business, and a cleaner to clean the office. As a Freelancer, you are not only required to do the work of the Writer who does the Work; you also have to advertise your business (Sales), print and Send invoices (Accounts), chase payment of unpaid bills (Accounts), design that leaflet (Sales) and Answer the telephone. All at the Same time. ========== You want to continue? Yes, OK. Business Research and Planning is next, and don't say you don't need it. Susan Drake writes a very good book, Freelancing for Dummies, and teach yourself has a very good book on the subject as well. Get reading. Make sure you are absoloutly sure you want to do this. ======= Now, to start the business. Register as Self Employed with HMRC (Inland Revenue). See http://www.hmrc.gov.uk for details. You are LEGALLY required to do this before you market your services to the public. Open a business Bank Account. This ensures your finances are easy to distinguish between personal and Business.Your bank will be the best to start there. This means you can have clients paying you money, and you can clearly see what came from Business work. Stationary is a must, but think carefully. long time ago, I started with A pen, a notebook, a diary and a pack of Paper from Asda, and a local Print Shop made a pile of Letterheads and a deck of Business Cards. I was ready. Now, your first marketing. If you are experienced, you no doubt have a little black book of your previous business contacts, co-workers, bosses etc. Spread the word. Visit their premises, describe your business and leave them some cards. If they remember you as a brilliant writer, they would possibly use you, as well as pass the word on. Don't stop now, wherever you go, sell your business. Keep cards in your wallet. It is important to use this as much as possible, as this is how you get business. Ads in the Yellow pages and such work. Freelancing is great if you start off right, and keep going and you can make it work. It can be the springboard to get you onto other things. I am now a Hotel consultant who advises hotels on how to run their business, but I once started similar to you.
