Is it hard to become a Music Journalist?

What should I have to study to become a Music Journalist?

  • I've been told to study all sorts of writing and Music History. Also, is there like a specific genre of music you could cover, or do I have to know tons about all sorts of music? I'd like to stick with Rock, Modern Rock, Indie Rock, or maybe even Jazz. I would probably kill myself if I had to go with Pop or Hip-Hop. Thanks in advance. Cheers!

  • Answer:

"I would probably kill myself if I had to go with Pop or Hip-Hop." I resent that. Have you ever noticed how like when an animal has the names of two animals, the first name serves as an adjective and the second name is what it is. For instance, A spider monkey is a monkey. A catfish is a fish. A tiger shark is a shark. Well in the same way, a music journalist is a journalist. So you'll need to be more versed in writing than you will in music. Ideally, a major in writing and a minor in some music degree are best but even just taking some music classes while you only major in writing should be fine. Also, a quick google search revealed that lots of schools have degrees in music journalism.
