Freedom of expression, like any other forms of freedom, needs to balanced against other principles. It is foolish and short-sighted to say that freedom of expression should be maintained at all costs, at all times. If such freedom conflicts with other factors which result in more harm than good, then it must be abandoned. Your question regarding the "boundary" of freedom has no fixed answer. The boundaries depend on what that freedom is in conflict with, and what the repercussions are if that freedom is expressed. If freedom of expression will result in riots that will kill dozens of people, while serving no other good to the general public, it probably should be kept under wraps.

When anything is declared 'too sacred to be criticized' it immediately becomes used by individuals to hide behind, thus using the sacred thing to sheild their unholy activities. I am much more offended by those that use my faith to justify their evil acts than I am by any who mock my faith. Indeed, I blame much of the latter on the former. I am a mormon in Utah, for the record, and my religion is constantly used to justify decidedly unchristian things here.

Freedom of speech is meant for this context: "King George, we are paying too much in taxes without enough representation." Freedom of speech is NOT meant for this context: "King George, you're short, fat, and ugly." Do i think it should be legal to tell King George he is short, fat, and ugly? Absolutely! But don't do it!
