Why did Gerry McCann Tell Us All To Stop Calling Her Maddie/Maddy?

  • Gerry McCann apparently told the media and the public too stop referring to his daughter as Maddie or Maddy - we should all call her Madeliene. Surely if he wants us all to have her in our hearts and minds it doesn't matter what we call her. In fact, a shortened name suggests a closer bond between people. It must be much easier for us to think of "Our Little Maddie" and keep her in our hearts. Where's the harm in it? Surely the important thing is getting her back, not what we call her.

    I have had many debates on this subject, one being with a close friend yesterday. She said that Gerry McCann asking for his daughter to be called Madeleine was a little hypocritical when the family also use Maddie to address her. I asked her how she knew this and she logged onto his profile in Friends Reunited. The latter part of which says "April 2005- Back in Leicester and looking for a job. Now father of three with Sean and Amelie joing Maddie." I think she made a valid point. Who exactly named her Maddie in the media circus? Was it purely down to the media or had the McCanns named her as Maddie to reporters? Either way this is a small child, who is missing. She deserves to be found safe and sound soon. And whether you call her Maddie or Madeleine does it really matter?

If you saw her in the street (unlikely as it may be) and called 'Maddie' she probably wouldn't know who the hell you were talking to. She has only ever been known as Madeleine - according to her family. That's one good reason.

Haven't we already established that Gerry and Kate are morons? Why not make one more moronic comment to put on the ever growing list? The people left their children alone, started team McCann, planned a trip around europe, spend everyday going to church and planning publicity campains and have told the general public not to give Maddy a nickname. Screw them if they don't want the help of us. These people don't seem to have a brain cell between them.

If the family call her Madeliene and not Maddy, then the sensible thing would be for all to be referring to her as Madeline because this is the name she will be used to hearing, will respond to etc. If a member of the public were to spot a little girl that resembles her and they call out "Maddie!" she may not respond and the search will be hindered, whereas if they had called "Madeliene!" she would probably turn her head which would help identify her.

because she's not your "little maddie" the majority of you dont even know her and have never met her. but I agree the most important thing is finding her edit... she isnt yours??? I totally disagree with the media circus its a bluumin disgrace and the child is not "public property" ?!

Because this girl is not 'our little Maddie' she is THEIR little Maddie. For God's sake will you people stop jumping on the bandwagon and getting so hysterical about something you personally can do nothing positive about. It's very nice that people care, but don't start trying to claim any sort of ownership over some little girl that YOU DON'T KNOW AND HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH. N.b. this is not aimed solely at the poster of this question but all of those recently jumping on the 'bring Maddy home' bandwagon. You are not helping matters, only sensationalising them and creating hysteria.
