Do you think declaring cuss-free zones is a good idea?
-
South Pasadena declared itself a cuss-free zone for a week last March, and two years ago a high school in Canada threatened to suspend repeat cussers. Hatch, the 10th grader, has lofty goals. "Next year I want to try to get California to have a cuss-free week. And then, who knows, maybe worldwide," said the 10th grader, who believes if people treat each other with more civility they can better work together to solve bigger problems. He said his campaign began to form about the time he hit seventh grade when he noticed his friends beginning to swear, something his family didn't allow. He formed the No Cussing Club and invited others to join. Soon the group had a Web site, bright orange T-shirts, a hip hop theme song and inquiries from all over from people interested in joining. He estimates 20,000 people have formed similar clubs. "It's not about forcing anyone to stop, just to bring awareness," he says of the movement. "If you can do a week without cussing, maybe you can do two weeks. And then maybe a month." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090302/ap_on_fe_st/odd_no_cussing;_ylt=AnMbk3TRloWmtjOmzWJGBYvtiBIF

Oh, the temptation to swear! I'm not a fan of enforced no-swearing. There's nothing wrong in expressing frustration or even anger. "Cuss" words allow us to do that without feeling that we have to thump people. Obviously it can get too much, when people throw in a swear word every other word, but the opposite is quite stifling and plastic. I wish I could swear on here.

What is a cuss word? People believe different things, and what offends one person may not offend the other- making us all guilty. A Cuss-Free Zone is a 1st Amendment-Free Zone.
Hey Diddle Diddle!
No, swearing is all I have left! Everything else will either kill me, or others around me!

I think there's the basis for a good idea there, but it would have to be voluntary. There was a time when people sneered at the rising trend for purity symbols worn by young people, but that has become a very effective and successful thing. At the very least, a no cussing zone allows those people who secretly would prefer not to have to swear to stop doing so whilst saving face. It certainly wouldn't do any harm.
