What is extensive farming?

What do you think about the NZ Government, thinking about banning these Pig farming practices?

  • Source: http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/farming/4321647/Govt-may-ban-pig-farming-practices Prime Minister John Key has signalled the government may consider a ban on some controversial pig farming practices. Asked today about a plan by the Victorian government to ban sow stalls by 2017 Mr Key said the New Zealand government was considering a report that covered pig farming practices. He confirmed that New Zealand may follow Australia's lead but said the Agriculture Minister David Carter was still considering the report. Sow stalls are narrow crates used to house pregnant sows in intensive farming operations. Pig farming practices are coming under increasing scrutiny. Jan Cameron, the founder of outdoor clothing and equipment chain Kathmandu has given $2 million to help fight factory farming with some of the money being offered to workers to rat on their bosses. The Animal Justice Fund (AJF) was launched by the animal rights group Save Animals From Exploitation (Safe) today after Cameron's donation.

  • Answer:

I agree with the new regulations in farming. The poor pigs have rights as well. But why to publicly support all the rating? Today they'll rat the farming of the sows - tomorrow they rat on "us the people". The Aussie and Kiwi society was well known for their non dob-in activity. Is that going to change for the few measly dollars. How pathetic is greed.

The consumer demands good food at the cheapest possible price. That can't be achieved without factory farming. I'm not saying I'm in favour of factory farming, I'm just telling you as it is.

About time too, and I hope Oz will follow suit, I didn't realize but when my brother visited me from Oz and saw a local pig farm which looks like a holiday village for pigs (straw bale huts pigs all wandering around and visiting their neighbours) he commented "now that's how to keep pigs" I shop at Waitrose they support free range!

Here in the US, the State of Florida passed an amendment to the State Constitution for just that reason. Once the voters saw some of the conditions on the pig 'factories' they tried to get a law through the Legislature, but the politicians in Florida are the most corrupt I've ever seen, and I'm from Chicago! Rich farm corporations flooded the Florida House & Senate with cash, and the law never got out of committee. The only other option was the amendment, and that passed, back in ... 2002? '03? Something like that. Vox populi, vox dei - The voice of the people is the voice of God.
