Obesity engulfing world, say experts Pandemic ‘led by affluent western nations’ Agence France-Presse Last updated 04:36pm (Mla time) 09/03/2006 SYDNEY -- Obesity has reached pandemic proportions throughout the world and is now the greatest single contributor to chronic disease, an international conference was told here on Sunday. "This insidious, creeping pandemic of obesity is now engulfing the entire world," Australia's Monash University professor Paul Zimmet, chair of the 10th International Congress on Obesity, said on the opening day of the conference. The spread of the problem was "led by affluent western nations, whose physical activity and dietary habits are regrettably being adopted by developing nations," Zimmet told more than 2,000 delegates. The world now has more fat people than hungry ones, according to World Health Organization figures, with more than a billion overweight people compared to 800 million who are undernourished.

it is just what happens to man when he has food in unlimited quantities and dont have to put forth any effort to get the food. even poor people can eat like a king. not the really poor people but the ones with a very low income. we no longer have to chop the wood and hunt for supper. so one would not be apt to save food for the next meal like back in the day. unhealthy fat filled foods at every turn helps none either. people just dont care anymore. if it taste good dont eat one but eat six. the invention of the refrigerator has helped to put food at just steps from our mouth. if we dont have to catch or hunt and clean our food it loses its value. the fast food and all of the restaurants make it to easy to find food. no muss, no fuss and you have a plate full. wealth and easy to get to food is going to crush us.

One word: Exercise. Go to Wal-Mart and buy a set of free weights for like $20.00(price depends on how strong you are). Best money you ever spent.

Have you seen how many *all you can eat* buffets there are around?? And a lot of them the prices are not even high (we don't have them here but man there sure are a lot down there). Also I know when I was down to Atlanta for 10 days I was taking in the grand city and doing hours and hours of walking around seeing things (and I was wearing a brace on my leg at the time). One comment that was said to me was - we don't walk anywhere down here because our transportation is so good and so cheap so why walk. That kind of explained a lot - if people aren't even willing to do a little walking how can any society start to get fit?

Obesity is a health problem. Full stop. In America, in Europe, anywhere.

hard sell advertising is the biggest contributor to obesity , not only in America but all over the world . the sad reality is that America lead the way in advertising , even when you look at photos of places like china and India , where the 'colonel ' is to be seen everywhere , where do you go from there , after all it doesn't taste too bad , so how many nuggets can you get for a rupee ?? therein lies the beginning of obesity because it does indeed create laziness.

i feel bad for people who are starving, not for the ones who spend two hours at the Chinese buffets over eating like there is no tomorrow. then they can't even walk. seriously. I do not intend to be offensive but when I buy a plane ticket I suffer if a big person sits nex to me. It's just a little unconfortable to have a stranger breathing so close to ya. go to the gym people.

I think it's all to do with these genetically modified foods. I think America is the experiment ground for scientist. I mean have you seen the huge amount of food they put on a plate for something like 5dollars - that is never naturally grown food. The size of a steak takes up half the table and the price is dirt cheap. Not natural, not natural at all at all
