What is the Australian government doing about alcohol addiction?

Straight outta the Nutt-house: alcohol does more harm than Heroin or crack Cocaine - really?

  • Everyones favourite ironically-named former chief drugs adviser to the government, professor David Nutt, has authored a report in the medical journal The Lancet, which claims such considered factors as crime, addiction levels and cost to the community are worse with alcohol than those associated with hard drugs: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11660210 I am not a medical person by any means. However, even with the explanation, I am sceptical Do you concur with the findings?

  • Answer:

Yes I do agree with him.I have been sober now for nearly 5 years I was drinking vodka 24/7 and nearly killed myself.Alcohol is cheap and during my time in recovery I have seen the people who need treatment getting younger, teenagers with liver damage, pancreatic damage etc.Go down to A&E on a weekend night and see the cost and damage alcohol causes(I've been there!).On top of that there is debt, broken homes, and of course the violence.I always had money for my booze but I would have stolen money or shoplifted to get it had I not,I sometimes went through agony waiting for the shop to be able to sell me booze in the morning, but then found a shop to where I could get it at 6-00am.The difference between alcohol and drugs is that alcohol is legal freely avaliable and cheap!

This is the truth and David Nutt is just a brave man and speaks the truth which governments are trying to hid all over the world alcohol kills thousands of people a year compared to a few on either crack or heroin. alcohol is the worse drug of all it ruins millions of families and lives where as heroin and crack can and do but not as common propaganda is used to portray a different story however!

It's misleading spin on real statistics. Imagine 80% of the population drink or have drunk at some point where as 1% have done hard drugs. It stands to reason that alcohol will be involved in far more unpleasant incidents.

I actually do concur with the findings. Have you ever been to an A&E on a Friday or Saturday night, you will see a lot of people covered in blood after a drunken scrap? Do you know how many deaths and injuries are caused on the road as a result of drink driving (statistics from the DfT indicate in 2008, the total was 430 deaths, 1,630 serious injuries, and 10,970 not so serious)? Have you ever seen the effects of an alcoholic has on their family? What about rape which have occured as the result of alcohol intoxication? What about domestic violence which has taken place as the result of alcohol? What about drunken hooligans wandering around the street hurling abuse at people, or scaring older folk to the point where they cannot leave their home, or parents will not allow their kids out? It does happen in inner city estates. There was a woman on TV saying that "my grandmother drinks a glass of wine every day, and she is alive, she wouldn't be alive if she was taking heroin" - well, replace the glass of wine with a 75cl bottle of vodka, and then you can make a more fairer comparison! I am with the Nutty one, here.

Yes I would. The number of people who's lives are slowly eaten away by alcohol is probably quite frightening.

most idiotic crap i've heard in a while. My god, im speechless. has this guy ever seen a heroin junkie? compared that to an alcoholic?

The Nutty Professor is indeed correct for all the reasons outlined by Beastie and Natalie, there is no point me rehashing them! Alcohol has ruined far more lives than any other drug.

I think Prof. Nutt is well named - you don't get too many yobs on street corners selling cans of Fosters do you?

Mr Nutt (is that Pea or Wal?) is not comparing like-for-like. More people are killed in car crashes than in BASE jumping. Does that mean we should all give up driving cars and go jump off the top of towers instead?

Yes I do, its not just the excessive abuser it's the battered wives, the stabbed bystanders, the kids whose lives are blighted by an alcoholicparent, the women who've been raped, the girls who've forgotten who they are and can't remember who the father of their babies are either because they were too busy partying to care, and the teenagers, yes teenagers who are dying in hospital with cirrhosis of the liver. We pay a heavy price for alcohol.
