Have the victims of Bhopal gas tragedy got full justice?

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Bhopal-gas-tragedy-Bail-granted-to-7-convicts/articleshow/6018746.cms The seven Indian Union Carbide India Ltd (UCIL) officials convicted in the 26-year-old Bhopal gas tragedy case have been granted bail and released on submission of a surety of Rs 25,000 by a trial court in Bhopal, according to a Times Now report. Earlier on Monday, eight accused, one of whom is deceased, were sentenced to two years in prison for causing death due to negligence. ►After 26 years, the culprits of the death of thousands of people have been given just 2 years of punishment. Is it what the value of human life?

Answer:
Justice? Full justice??!! There was a crude insult to the victims by sentencing the serious culprits to two years simple imprisoment and allowing to be left on bail. At least a life sentence would have consoled the families who had lost their best part of life in agony of pain and deprivation. The former CJI said short of condemning the sentence, while Law Minister smartly called it unjust, to wean his Govt from the drama!! Even if the CBI had put weak charges on the administration, the court should have pulled them up saying if they were at all doing justice to their job as apex Prosecutors of the country. Now Activists may appeal and apex court may perhaps increase the sentence. But the fact that a worst tragedy was decided in this tardy fashion after a quarter century of hide and seek by the Prosecutors and the accused, speaks poorly of the play of justice administrtion in the country.

No not at all!!!! This is utter injustice. The people responsible for the death of 25,000 people get only 2 years in jail !!! This is ridiculous.

NO, Of course Twenty five years after the Bhopal gas tragedy claimed 15,000 lives, the city is still fuming. The local court today convicted eight executives of Union Carbide and sentenced them to two years of imprisonment. The guilty have been granted bail and released on submission of a surety of just Rs 25,000. The government says the disaster killed around 3,500. But activists calculate that 8,000 people died in the immediate aftermath and thousands more have died of illnesses related to gas exposure in the years that followed. They say a total of 25,000 people have died since 1984. Activists and health workers say a further 100,000 people who were exposed to the gas continue to suffer chronic health problems today. Sicknesses range from cancer, blindness, respiratory difficulties, immune and neurological disorders, female reproductive disorders as well as birth defects among children born to affected women. So has justice been not just delayed but denied for the victims of India's most horrific industrial tragedy? In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Mukul Rohatgi, Supreme Court Advocate; Sunita Narain, Director, Center for Science & Environment, and Prashant Bhushan, Supreme Court Advocate gave their perspectives on the judgement and what it meant for affected communities still protesting 25 years on. Below is a verbatim transcript. Q: It's taken 25 long years for justice to be delivered but what have you made of the fact that 8 accused have been convicted for criminal negligence. What has come as a much delayed diluted sentence? Narain: This is exactly what the activists in Bhopal who have been fighting this really long battle for the last 25 years are saying today to all of you, to the whole world that this is not justice, this is a travesty of justice. It is too late and it is too little and it is particularly important for us to recognize this given the fact that the tragedy of Bhopal continues to happen. There are still victims of Bhopal, that the chemical disaster happened 25 years ago and yet even till today there is toxic contamination lying in the factory of Union Carbide. India clearly just has not learnt any lesson of how it will deal with a disaster like Bhopal.

(I'm going for copy paste of my previous answer) SHAME.......A NATIONAL SHAME... The verdict is another tragedy for the victims. 26 years after India's worst industrial disaster, which killed 25 thousand people, disabled 1.2 Lakh people permanently and affected 5 Lakh, but still the wait for justice is not over. These criminals were convicted for only 2 years and then bailed within 2 minutes by signing a bond of Rs. 25,000. What a coincidence... In 1984, Anderson was also bailed for Rs. 25,000 25,000 people were killed and these mass murderers were bailed for just Rs. 25000. That means Re 1 for each life. Thats the cost of an Indian life, just 1 rupee. But this is not the fault of only court, actually the whole system has failed completely. Its the fault of Govt of India, CBI and Our Judiciary including Supreme Court. I'm sorry but I have to include Supreme Court but the biggest culprit is Govt of India, right from Rajiv Gandhi to AB Vajpayee, everyone is a culprit. If u don't agree with me then please answer these : 1) Why did we let Warren Anderson fly out of India, that too just 4 days after the tragedy ?? 2) Why did the people who claim to represent us sold us out completely ?? 3) Why did they dilute the charges intentionally ?? 4) Why did the court allow dilution of charges ?? 5) Why did we ask for extradition of Anderson only after 19 years of the incident ?? 6) Why only after 20 years Supreme Court accepted that the gas victims were 5.73 lakh and not 1 lakh. It doesn't matter who the PM was but the story remained the same. Every Govt was trying to compromise the interest of Bhopal Gas Victims. The govts were hand in glove with those who wanted to save the skin of top officials of UCIL. Please correct me if I'm wrong 1989 - Govt opted for out of court settlement. All the criminal and civil liabilities against UCIL were dropped. What more...$3 billion should have been the compensation but they gave only $470 million and the Govt settled for that i.e 1/7th of the amount demanded. 1994 - Govt failed to prevent sale of UCIL thus the grip of Indian Courts on the main accused was loosened 1996- Charges against UCIL were wattered down just to negligence by SC and CBI failed to go for revision petition. 2002 - CBI moved court to dilute charges against Anderson but fortunately the court rejected Thats why I'm saying the script of this verdict was written much earlier and every Govt has contribution in it. We can't go in past and change the things but even our future is in danger. What about the "Nuclear Liability Bill" which the Govt is going to bring soon in Parliament ?? According to it, if some thing like this happens in any of the 18 nuclear plants then the onus of compensation would be on Indian Partner. Why don't we learn from past ??

The Bhopal gas tragedy that had caused 3,000 deaths instantly and nearly 25,000 deaths over the next couple years apart from incurable diseases, physical and mental disorders to over half-a-million people, is nearly a forgotten affair today. No.It's Injustice.Still now the people are suffering.25 YEARS OF INJUSTICE TO PEOPLE OF BHOPAL.. It's India's shame not just because the main culprit, Warren Anderson, could never be arrested or extradited. It's also our shame because the ministers and bureaucracy has done its best to absolve the culprits and suppress the voice of the victims. After a quarter century, none of the accused could be sentenced or jailed as cases drag on.

NO this was not "JUSTICE" this is the insult of a common man to tell him that no matter how much big is the incident, if u try to knock the door of court, then u'll have to suffer like this. this is SHAME, after 25 yrs, they are giving them just 2 yrs of jail which I guess is bailable. this was somewhat similar to Ruchika's case ....this is like giving a man death sentence after 100 yrs this country is going in gutter
Praveen
absolutely NOT!!!! 15274 murders n just juz 2 yrs in jail!! dat means.. 21 killings = 1 day in jail..!!! dats our india...huh!!

Well!!!!!!!! The Judge does not know the value of a HUman Life!!

Unfortunately human life is worth more in certain areas and less in others. India is a class ridden country and countries with class systems dont place the same value on all of the members of society. Unenlightened and backwards? Yes. An unfortunate truth all the same.
