Bf wants me to buy his mother gifts?

  • Ok so I just started dating this guy like 2 weeks ago, and already met his mother (he needed her to make food and borrow the vacuum) I also JUST bought a car, which he is helping me out with. We have known each other a month. When I asked what his mother thought of me he told me she liked me, and that he liked his ex who used to buy her stuff from Victoria's secret (she worked there) THEN he said I should buy his mother gifts... FIRST of all I do NOT have a job, I'm about to be doing 16 units at college, I just borrowed $1,500 from my mother, and only getting $300 a month from my father for going to school... I nicely told him I do not have the money to be buying his mother gifts, and he said "I don't have money to take you out, but I do" uh... wtf? where under the "dating rule book" does it say "must buy bf's mother gifts?" I can see holidays... but weekly or monthly?? Should I tell him I don't want to go out on dates or something? I've decided to get a job, and have already applied to one, but idk... Should I be buying him more gifts or something? He never offered to buy me gifts (although he does take me on dates a lot) what would you do? p.s: he is perfect other than that

    I would take this as a red flag in your relationship. That is extremely odd & it is never expected that the girlfriend buy the mother gifts. He's basically telling you to buy her love, which is crazy. If he is trying to push this off on you then maybe down the road he might try to convince you of other things you should be doing to better your relationship. If he takes you out on dates alot, congrats to him because that's what is suppose to happen in a relationship. He dated you knowing you didn't have a job. I think he needs to snap in reality.

Wow, I dont think telling you to get his mother gifts is appropriate, nope, not at all. Dont get a job just to spend it on either of them. I would wonder if this guy is good date material in the first place..lol

Unless it's a cultural thing I am missing here and his mother will be highly offended and disrespected, I wouldn't by his mother anything. I buy gifts for people when I want to....when they deserve it or holidays/birthdays. If you develop a relationship with his mom and feel she is 'down-to-earth' enough to get a gift, that would be understandable.... But "Sorry Buddy! I am not going to give your mother a gift because she gave birth to a momma's boy."

You guys are early in your relationship and so he is asking too much of you. You are not required to get his mother anything. He just wants her to like you just as much as she liked your ex. Explain how maybe when you have the resources and know her better you will work on getting her a gift to reflect your relationship with her, but that is a you and her thing.
