Has anybody been to Hungary?

What Happened to Bekesz, Hungary and Bansdor, Slavonia , towns of the early 1900's ?

  • Anybody help me find these cities on a map of the 1900 era ? I'm not even sure where/how to find a map, I tried on the internet but I guess my computer skills aren't that great. Bekesz, Hungary and Bansdor, Slavonia. A Ship's Manifest of 1907 & 1909 list passengers coming from these cities as German. I have tried to find maps of the time to locate these but haven't been able to. I am trying to find out the location and know if these cities still exist today or if the names have been changed to something else ? Maybe the name of the country has been changed also ? I question German speaking passengers coming from Hungary & Slavonia. I did find Slavonia in what is now Croatia but not the city. I believe this info is in the computer but I just don't know where to find it. Anybody have any ideas where I can look ? These are my grandparents and these are the cities they listed they last lived in on the manifest when they came to America before WW 1. They always called themselves, ''Germans'' and spoke German, so this was a huge surprise for us. Sadly, both are gone and I never met either of them. I'm trying to find something, maybe even a family photo somewhere. I was told of the Austrian-Hungary war, A. lost, so a large part of Austria became Hungary but the people spoke German and considered themselves Germans. I haven't been able to research that yet either. Appreciate any help and a direction to go.

  • Answer:

Hi! My grandmother came to America in 1912 from Hungary. When she left it was called Austria-Hungary. She was fluent in both Hungarian and German. She was from a little town around Lake Balaton.(spelling?) Anyway, I do know Bekesz is sometimes spelled as Bekes. I found something about Bekes county in Wikipedia. I do not know if this helps or not? But I wish you well in your search. Just type in Bekes county Hungary in the search box. If you go to Wikipedia, type in Hungary and there will also be a place where you can get a full list of towns in Hungary. Bekes will be spelled like that. I found this city listed. Also, if you find out where they were from, baptism records are one of the best ways to find records that old in Hungary. Check the old church records or synagogues. I searched for my grandmother's baptism records and found them. Click on this link to see if this helps any. http://wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%A9k%C3%A9s Peace!

I wonder if a call to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum would help? The top floor has reams of books of manifests & documents. More importantly, a librarian there could probably point you in some useful direction. Also, if the site lists their research fellowships, & you have a little kutzbah to call one, they probably have ideas. Come to think of it, the site probably has links on it. I'll star & see what my contacts know. There are geneology groups all over that have experience in how to track down things. The names can easily change. There's a house out in Prussia that changed countrys (yep, countrys) some 17 times all without moving an inch. Spellings can completely vary as well. Your grandparents names may help as well. Sometimes names reflected the town they came from. Or gave indication of region.

I think if you go to a university library you will find what you need and I would also suggest that you contact the history department at the university. If you can, go to the Mormons Family History Centers, they give personal and professional help with everything there.
